Lee & Anthony Freedman’s Singaporean import Super One is tipped as the one to beat first-up at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide on Saturday leading the latest markets for the DC McKay Stakes 2016.
A key Robert Sangster Stakes Day support act, this year’s $120,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) is due to run as Race 4 at 2:00pm (local) and features a final field of 11.
Super One is drawn just worse than mid-field in barrier seven with Daniel Moor booked to ride the I Am Invincible colt who pays $3.80 for the win through Ladbrokes.com.au.
A multiple stakes winner in Singapore, the youngster has had two runs in Australia but failed to make an impression last time out at Flemington on Derby Day in October when 11th to Japonisme in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
He has lots of natural ability and runs well fresh, so could break his maiden status down under in this but he’ll have to hold out a few nice types including $4.40 second favourite and reigning DC McKay Stakes winner Thermal Current.
Darren Weir’s Exceed and Excel five-year-old gets the gun run from barrier two on Saturday with Damian Lane aboard.
Super One gets in on the raised 54.5kg minimum, while Thermal Current carries 57kg for his fourth run at the Morphettville track going up a kilo from his winning weight in the same race last Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
Two back he won the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington, while his latest run was a close fourth to Miss Promiscuity when beaten only 1.6 lengths in Caulfield’s VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) in mid-April.
There are two other single-figure hopes in the latest DC McKay Stakes betting markets with Nostradamus ($6) and I Am Gypsy ($8).
Locally trained by Phillip Stokes, Nostradamus is drawn well in barrier three but carries the second top weight of 57.5kg.
Adelaide’s best hoop Dom Tourneur has the ride aboard the smart Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old, the stallion coming off a narrow win with a kilo more on his back in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at the track a fortnight back.
I Am Gypsy was runner-up beaten only a neck in the same traditional lead-up from April 23, the Gordon Richards-trained mare looking to turn the tables.
She was runner-up the run before also behind Daytona Grey in the Listed Manihi Classic (1100m) and drops from 56.5kg in the RN Irwin to 54.5kg this weekend.
Three other runners follow on $11 in the current DC McKay Stakes odds with the Tony McEvoy-trained Commands mare The Messina Nymph, recent Manihi Classic winner Daytona Grey and Scratchy Lass – shooting for her third win on the trot – all with claims.
