A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day takes place at the Gold Coast Racecourse this Saturday during the early part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and the last on the card sees the three-year-olds face off in the Gold Coast Guineas 2016.
Bringing the action to a close as Race 8 at 4:20pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) features a full field of 16 starters plus four emergencies awaiting a run.
Sitting top of the Gold Coast Guineas field and betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au as the firming $3.50 favourite is the Gary Moore-trained Sydney raider Takedown.
The son of Stratum has been in good form over his autumn campaign at home that includes a close last start second when under a length off the Chris Waller-trained quinella of Japonisme and Counterattack in the Group 2 Arrowfield 2YO Sprint (1200m) on April 9.
This looks an easier class of rivals and Takedown is drawn a treat in gate five with Tim Clark replacing the Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble in the saddle.
Hot on his heels in the current Gold Coast Guineas odds at $3.60 is Santa Ana Lane also drawn nicely in gate two for top Brisbane jockey Damian Browne.
Prepared in Melbourne by Lee & Anthony Freedman, the Lope De Vega gelding is a Group 3 winner at Caulfield from late February and has been racing well in Sydney.
His latest run produced a close third to Ammirata over 1200m at Randwick on April 16 carrying 60.5kg and he should enjoy coming back to 57kg at set weights in the Guineas.
Despite the size of the field there are no other single-figure odds to win the Gold Coast Guineas this season.
The next best in betting and representing nice value are the consistent Collate filly Sold For Song ($11) from Toowoomba and Sydney visitor Brigadoon Rise ($12).
The Kevin Kamp-trained Sold For Song won the Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m) last December at Doomben and took her career record to two wins and two seconds from four starts last time out when runner-up in the Listed Mick Dittman (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on April 23.
Brigadoon Rise is drawn for a big run in gate four on the weekend, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of Stratum has had two Black-Type runs so far including a brave last start fourth when beaten under a length by Yattarna in Randwick’s Group 3 James Carr Stakes (1400m).
It is a wide market after that with a further three hopefuls at $13 for the win with Matthew Dunn’s last start Doomben winning son of Fastnet Rock Perfect Dare, local Gold Coast-based Always Sacred who has a gun record at the track (4-2-1-0) and Stuart Kendrick’s Mick Dittman winning filly Divine Centuri.
