The weight-for-age $650,000 Group 1 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) has been dominated by Sydney raiders in recent seasons and there is again a strong showing of interstate hopes in the mix for 2016.

Last year’s Doomben Cup winner was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet (2015), Waterhouse also having won the race in 1996 with Juggler.

She returns 20 years since her maiden win with one entry this season, Excess Knowledge.

The six-year-old Monsun stallion was last seen running second at Rosehill on March 12 in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and runs in this weekend’s traditional Doomben Cup lead-up, the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast.

The Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double was last achieved two years back buy Streama (2014), who is also only the second winner of the latter in over 30 years along with Cinque Cento (2007).

This winter there are four mares and one filly, the John O’Shea-trained ATC Oaks runner-up Ambience, nominated for the Doomben Cup.

The mares in the mix are Gold Coast-trained Tarloshan, Chris Waller’s Lady Le Fay who won the Anzac Handicap last start, the Robert Smerdon-trained Queen Of The Turf Stakes third-placed Noble Protector and Darren Weir’s former Perth-based Real Love.

Desert King five-year-old Desert King was third beaten under a length two back in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) before just being nosed out of a 2000m Caulfield win by Doctor Care on April 23.

No three-year-old has won the Doomben Cup since Akhenaton (2000) 16 years ago, and only three are nominated to try and break the drought this season.

The other two three-year-olds among the early entries aside from the aforementioned Ambience are her stablemate Old North and the Desleigh Forster-trained Cylinder Beach.

Winner of the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) two back, the Godolphin-raced Lonhro colt Old North backed-up with a Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) second and races again on the weekend in the Hollindale Stakes.

Local Showcasing gelding Cylinder Beach meanwhile enjoyed a big winter as a two-year-old last year including his close fourth in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m), and returned to racing last weekend with a win in the Group 3 Gunysnd Classic (1630m).

The other big name Doomben Cup nominations accepted for a Hollindale Stakes run this season include favourite for the latter Hauraki who was runner-up in last year’s ATC Derby, the Steven O’Dea-trained Hollindale runner-up last winter Sir Moments and Waller’s French import Spiritjim.

Another headline interstate raider is the Robert Hickmott-trained Gallante, winner of the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 9.

Other notable Doomben Cup nominees include the O’Shea-trained Havana Cooler, Ben Currie’s Toowomba Cup winner Honey Toast and Caulfield Cup third placed German import Our Ivanhowe.

The 2016 Doomben Cup first acceptances close at 9am next Wednesday, May 11, so now is the time to get ready for the action by signing-up with Ladbrokes.com.au and enjoying up to $500 in bonuses when you deposit and quote the code BETBONUS!
