Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:00pm (local), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) features the capacity 20 starters plus three emergencies.

The top-rated of the runners is the David Brideoake-trained Griante due to jump from a gun barrier three draw with interstate hoop Craig Williams booked for the ride.

Barrier three last produced a Robert Sangster Stakes winner in Black Caviar (2012), the Mornington-trained Good journey five-year-old Griante out to be the next.

Two back on March 19 she won the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill before her last start sixth to Two Blue in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 9 that she’s out to atone for here.

She drops from 58kg that run to 56.5kg at weight-for-age on the weekend and has just two drawn on her inside.

The rails run from barrier one belongs to the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Sheidel, while Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir will saddle-up Tuscan Sling from gate two with Brad Rawiller in the saddle.

Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old Sheidel is looking to continue the gun record of her age group in the race with the past four Robert Sangster Stakes winners taking out the classic in their 4YO season.

She comes off a last start Caulfield win in Black-Type company over 1100m from April 23, two of the past four Robert Sangster winners having won their lead-up run.

Hayes & Dabernig will also saddle-up the in-form Miss Promiscuity who had the opposite luck in the Robert Sangster Stakes barrier draw, and Group 3 winning Lonhro four-year-old Wawail (11).

A five-year-old daughter of Magnus, Miss Promiscuity comes off back-to-back Caulfield wins including the VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) where Group 1 winner The Quarterback ran third.

She has Luke Nolen aboard on the weekend, who rode Black Caviar to victory in the race four years ago, but has work to do from barrier 21 – into 18 of 20 on race day.

Tuscan Sling, a winner of six of her 13 starts to date, is also joined by a stablemate in Saturday’s Group 1 field in the fellow Weir-trained Scarlet Billows (13) who comes off a 1400m win at Caulfield from April 16.

Another notable last start winner in the mix is the Henry Dwyer-trained Econsul six-year-old Precious Gem who took out the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at home in mid-April from a wide barrier 14 of 15 draw.

Precious Gem has her first run in South Australia on Saturday from a nice barrier six draw, which Miracles Of Life (2015) won the race from last Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, but has a hoodoo to overcome.

If successful she will be the first six-year-old to win the race in over 30 years.

Last year’s third placegetter I Love It is back this weekend looking to go two better with a first-up Robert Sangster Stakes win for her Caulfield-based horseman John Salanitri.

The now five-year-old daughter of Artie Schiller was defeated just a length from the inside alley last May as a $26 shot, and this year comes off a Launceston win in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) back in February.

I Love It is first-up then and has a stellar record fresh of three wins and a second from six starts to date, jockey Stephen Baster booked for the ride from barrier five on the weekend.

Other notable hopes include the local Phillip Stokes-trained Runway Star coming off a third in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) that has produced two of the past three Robert Sangster Stakes winners and James Cummings’ PJ Bell Stakes winning filly Tempt Me Not out to be the first three-year-old winner of the clash since Rostova (2010).

The other gun three-year-old in the mix is Tony McEvoy’s flying Not A Single Doubt filly Don’t Doubt Mamma who won her Morphettville debut on April 23 defeating Miss Gunpowder in the Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m).
