Spill The Beans Ready for Hawkesbury Guineas

Gerald Ryan has been pleased with the work produced by Spill The Beans in recent weeks and is confident the colt is a leading chance of success in Saturday’s Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m).

Spill The Beans has only finished outside the first three a few times through his impressive racing career so far, but failed to make anything of an impact when luckless in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships.

Ryan does not know why the Snitzel colt failed to fire in the Arrowfield Sprint but told Racing Ahead he is a picture of health leading into the Hawkesbury Guineas and should prove very tough to beat.

“He drew a good barrier on the inside but was no good,” Ryan said.

“He never left the machines as quick as he did, I couldn’t fault him and on the Monday I thought he’d run top four, and I can’t fault him since.

“His only go at 1400m was second-up when we weren’t going to go there. He probably over-raced and pulled a bit but I don’t think it was a true guide on his ability to run 1400m.

“On his work, his appearance and his blood, I can’t find a reason.

“He’s drawn 10 and it’s probably a bit of a blessing because he’ll roll forward and I think he’ll run a very cheeky race.”

Spill The Beans immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow upon debuting to racing in late autumn last year; winning each of the TAB.com.au Maiden Handicap (1100m) and Australian Jewellery Liquidators Plate (1100m) before returning to the paddock with a view towards spring.

Trialling well in the lead-up to his spring return, Spill The Beans clearly needed a run when sixth in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) first-up but responded in smart fashion when second to Counterattack in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later.

Again returning to the paddock after finishing third in the Flemington Fling (1000m) on Melbourne Cup Day, Spill The Beans returned this time with a career-best performance to win the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) on February 26th before finishing fourth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in his only other start prior to the Arrowfield Sprint.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Hawkesbury Guineas odds, for which Spill The Beans can be taken at a quote of $5.50 for success.
