The local Phillip Stokes-trained mare Rationality leads the latest markets for the City Of Adelaide Handicap 2016 run at Morphettville Parks on Chairman’s Stakes Day this Saturday in South Australia.
One of four Black-Type races on the program, this year’s $100,000 Listed Holdfast Insurance City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) is also the last event run at Morphettville Parks before the action moves to the main track for the Chairman’s Stakes.
Originally an above-capacity field of gallopers was engaged for the City Of Adelaide Handicap, but only 13 will take to the track after the early scratching of Guest Of Honour (15) and Whistle Baby (14) drawn the outside alleys.
Sitting top of the current City Of Adelaide Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.80 for the win is early market mover Rationality due to jump from barrier seven carrying the 54kg minimum with apprentice Emily Finnegan booked for the ride.
A winner of five of her 10 career starts to date, the four-year-old daughter of Flying Spur comes off a 1200m win at Morphettville just last weekend putting her on the quick back-up into Saturday’s tougher assignment.
She caught the eye and took out first prize with her brave on-pace win last weekend and is right in the mix again on Saturday shooting for her first stakes victory.
Occupying the second line of the City Of Adelaide Handicap betting this season at $5 is Zebulon, drawn wider in barrier 11 for his first-up run.
The Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison-trained All American four-year-old is a progressive, Group 1 performed gelding who was last seen finishing a brave second when beaten under a length by San Nicasio at Caulfield in late February’s Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m).
He has since won a Cranbourne trial over 800m so should be ready to resume fitness-wise, Zebulon having a solid first-up record of two seconds and a third from three previous runs fresh.
The other two best fancied are Tony McEvoy’s last start Oakbank winner Mr Backchat ($6.50) and a stablemate to the favourite Dylanson ($8) drawn in barriers eight and six respectively.
Sequalo five-year-old Mr Backchat has had 14 previous runs at the track for five wins, five seconds and a third and caught the eye carrying 57.5kg to victory over 1400m last time out.
He’s had four weeks between runs, drops back to 54kg and with Clare Lindop aboard can surprise at a nice price here.
Dylanson meanwhile carries the second top weight of 58kg with Dom Tourneur riding Stokes’s Dylan Thomas six-year-old who shoots for his first win since a narrow victory over Riziz in February.
Outside of the single-figure chances the other most notable hopes according to the bookies are the aforementioned Riziz ($10) and Alcohol ($10) carrying 58.5kg and 58kg respectively.
Paul Gatt rides Ken Sweeney’s rising eight-year-old Riziz who has his 44th career run on the weekend chasing his first victory since August last year.
Another local hope, the Richard Jolly-trained Bianconi gelding Alcohol is also a veteran seven-year-old drawn well with the rails run who is more lightly-raced with 26 career runs on the record so far.
