The John O’Shea-trained Dissolute is top fancy to break his maiden status in the feature race at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend leading markets for Melbourne’s Thoroughbred Club Cup 2016.
The sole Black-Type on the Caulfield race card on Saturday, this season’s $120,000 Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (1200m) features a final field of 11 two-year-old sprinters.
Sitting top of the current Thoroughbred Club Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the rails-drawn Dissolute who has his third career run on the weekend.
The Godolphin-raced New Approach colt gets the run of the race from barrier one with internationally performed hoop Craig Williams retaining the ride on the $3.50 favourite.
Last time out Dissolute and Williams were far from disgraced when beaten under a half-length crossing second to Valliano at Caulfield on April 16 in the VOBIS Gold Ingot (1200m) after a tough run from barrier 10 of 14.
The better barrier over the same track and distance looks ideal for Dissolute who the bookies are taking no chances with.
In a fairly open Thoroughbred Club Cup betting market another five youngsters are also under $10 for the win including Curvature ($5.50) in gate six with Luke Currie down for the ride.
Saturday sees the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Snitzel colt line-up for his third start following back-to-back seconds in the summer.
He hasn’t raced since early February at the track and distance when runner-up to subsequent VOBIS Gold Ingot winner Valliano in the Inglis Premier (1200m) and comes off a good recent jump-out.
Following in the markets are the well-tried Highland Beat ($7.50) and the unraced Epic Moment ($8) drawn alongside each other in gates eight and nine respectively.
The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Exceed And Excel colt Highland Beat has had eight career runs so far for two wins and three seconds.
During February he was runner-up to Extreme Choice in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) before finishing 10th to the same Mick Price-trained star in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
His two runs in easier company since have been good when second over 1100m at Caulfield on March 26 and then his one and a half-length win at Sandown-Lakeside on April 20.
If he brings his best form here he is capable of winning, but has been up awhile as has stablemate Lionhearted ($10) who comes off three Sydney runs including the Skyline Stakes second land last start sixth to El Divino in the Kindergarten Stakes.
Epic Moment meanwhile is prepared by Blue Diamond winning trainer Price, the son of Snitzel debuting on the weekend with Craig Newitt to ride the expensive yearling who looked good in a smart recent jump-out.
Rounding out the best in betting are then early market mover Fromparis Withlove ($9) and another Price-trained chance Oregon’s Day ($9.50).
