2016 Hawkesbury Guineas Betting Tips

One of the key races on the Hawkesbury Gold Cup Day card this Saturday sees the three-year-olds face off in the Hawkesbury Guineas 2016, betting tips for which are found below.

Handfast

Set to run as Hawkesbury Race 8 at 4:15pm (AEST), there are just 10 remaining runners in this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Blacktown Workers Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) after the early scratching of the John Thompson-trained Reneged (9).

Leading the updated Hawkesbury Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.40 and firming for the win is the John O’Shea-trained Handfast who has won three of his four starts this campaign.

Drawn in gate five with one of Sydney’s best James McDonald retaining the ride, the son of Street Cry comes off a Randwick victory from April 9 when taking out the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) by nearly two lengths.

He has another run over the distance this weekend looking to continue his good form and secure his first Group race win.

The next best in betting are the Gerald Ryan-trained Group 3 winning Snitzel colt Spill The Beans ($5.50), New Zealand-trained filly No More Tears ($6.50) coming off a Group 3 second at Randwick and David Pfieffer’s Denman filly Denmagic ($6.50) before the market opens up notably.

So will Handfast salute for the punters and continue his progression through the ranks from a good gate or is there value tipping an upset Hawkesbury Guineas result from the likes of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Fastnet Rock filly Serene Majesty ($14) or even the rails-drawn Sir Plush ($26) shooting for four wins on the trot?

1st

#2 Handfast ($2.40)

The favourite is hard to knock and he’s firming so if he is the one you want, now is the time to back him. The draw looks ideal, he is in flying form, McDonald knows the Godolphin-raced gelding well with this his fourth straight ride on him. The Black-Type Sydney win earlier in the month was by a good margin, this is the same distance and Handfast has a top record over the 1400m (3-2-1-0). Ticking all the boxes and with the right run he’s the one to beat.

2nd

#10 Denmagic ($6.50)

Of the fillies thing Denmagic is a genuine chance from her ideal barrier three draw. She was fifth in the James Carr last time out, which is producing a number of her Saturday rivals, and her sectional times were outstanding. She was beaten only a length in her first 1400m run since January and she’ll only improve off that assignment. She has winning form up to 1500m and has the ability to win this at her best.

3rd

#7 Sir Plush ($26)

Big value odds on Sir Plush who gets things his way from barrier one. This is a notable rise in class for the Bjorn Baker-trained Pins gelding who comes off three straight wins at the country tracks. The latest saw him carry 60kg over 1287m at Orange on April 19 to a big two and a half length win. He is up in distance and grade but looks up to it and shouldn’t be ignored.
