The first seven races on the card take place at Morphettville Parks but Race 8 at 4:43pm (local) sees the $120,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) take place on the Morphettville Main Track.

The set weights clash original drew a final field of 14 hopefuls but just 12 remain in contention after the early withdrawal of Rong Door Reggie (6) and Burton (11).

Leading the updated Chairman’s Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.80 for the win, in from $3.40, is the Darren Weir-trained Howard Be Thy Name.

The super-consistent Redoute’s Choice colt has had nine starts to date for three wins, three seconds and three thirds.

His last start produced a Morphettville Parks win in his first Adelaide run, Howard Be Thy Name posting a one length victory over Metro Cowboy in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m).

He is now tipped to repeat that form as he goes up in class and distance this weekend, his first look at further than 1800m since his brave second to Jerilderie Letter in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) in early February.

The other best fancied three-year-olds in the Chairman’s Stakes odds on the weekend that are likely eyeing a run in the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on May 14 include the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained stablemates Royal Rumble ($3.70) and Mail It In ($4.80).

So will the best in the markets be best over the line or is there an upset Chairman’s Stakes result pending from the likes of the Michael Moroney-trained Port Adelaide Guineas third placegetter War Legend ($6) or the widely-drawn Patch Adams ($10) coming off a sixth in the same traditional lead-up?

#1 Royal Rumble ($3.70)

Lots of boxes ticked by this promising son of New Approach who is back home in Adelaide after being far from disgraced when fourth behind Bengal Cat in Caulfield’s VOBIS Gold Reef over the mile a fortnight ago in Melbourne. At this track he boasts three wins and a third from five starts, including the Listed CS Hayes (1600m) in mid-March when defeating Lidari. He is yet to race over further than the mile but if he handles the extra metres here, which gate three and jockey Clare Lindop will help with, he’s going to be a big danger.

#2 Howard Be Thy Name ($2.80)

Deserving and firming favourite, Brad Rawiller is back on this nicely-bred Redoute’s Choice colt from the Melbourne Cup winning stables of Weir. He has won his past two on the trot, including in Adelaide in stakes company over 1800m, and has good form up to 2200m so the extra metres here shouldn’t be an issue. Beat most of these home in the Port Adelaide Guineas so is right up to this class.

#6 War Legend ($6)

A smart Victorian raider drawn well and coming off the right lead-up run having crossed just 1.2 lengths off the winner in the Port Adelaide Guineas. Before that the Rip Van Winkle gelding was fifth in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) against some tough competition at Moonee Valley, so has form around good types around this distance.
