Due to run as Doomben Race 2 at 12:38pm, there are 10 acceptors in this season’s $100,000 Listed Bribie Handicap (1050m) with the current markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Angels Beach ($3.80) who gives the weight away carrying 59kg.

Michael Cahill his booked to ride the Gerald Ryan-trained Sydney visitor, the six-year-old daughter of Bel Esprit looking to atone for a last start 10th of 10 runners behind 2016 Stradbroke Handicap hope Malaguerra in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m).

She’ll be back on the speed from barrier five on Saturday however with blinkers on, the mare having run a close second two back in the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m).

In an open market there are another six hopefuls under $10 for the win including the local Tony Gollan-trained Real Saga filly Secret Saga ($5) who has a gun record at Doomben and Peter Robl’s last start winner at the track Glenbawn Dame ($7).

So will the top weight and favourite salute for the Bribie Handicap punters or is there value tipping an upset from further down the markets including the rails-drawn Into The Red ($8) first-up for Eagle Farm horseman Kelso Wood or the Liam Birchley-trained four-year-old mare Lady Jetsetter ($9.50) coming off a Doomben win from the start of the month?

1st

#9 Secret Saga ($5)

The early money is coming for this progressive three-year-old filly who has a great record at the track with five wins and a second from nine previous Doomben starts. She won the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) here from a wide gate in late November, before a disappointing eighth in the Gold Edition Plate. She’s first-up on Saturday, runs well fresh, trialled nicely at Deagon on April 12, is well weighted on the 54kg minimum and has Tegan Harrison riding from a good gate three draw. Plenty of boxes ticked and still a nice price.

2nd

#6 Glenbawn Dame ($7)

Sydney-trained mare won at the track over 1100m on March 26. She is up in class but should be flying over the distance. She also only goes up from 53kg to 54kg so the weight looks a non-issue. A consistent performer that is well up to this with the right run second-up, her record showing two seconds from four previous runs two in.

3rd

#8 Lady Jetsetter ($9.50)

Another last-start winning mare, this local daughter of Jet Spur has three wins and two second from seven previous Doomben runs. All three were over Saturday’s distance, including the half-length effort carrying 56kg to victory on April 2. This is a slightly tougher field and she is drawn wide (9 of 10), but drops two kilos and is in good form under the light weight.
