The John O’Shea-trained mare Fitou is early favourite to win the Godolphin Crown 2016 on Hawkesbury Gold Cup Day this Saturday for the race’s namesake stable, Godolphin.
Formerly known as the Darley Crown, this year’s $175,000 Group 3 2016 Godolphin Crown (1300m) features a final field of 14 fillies and mares.
Top of the current Godolphin Crown odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $5 for the win is Fitou in barrier six with ace Sydney hoop James McDonald booked for the ride aboard the four-year-old.
The daughter of Street Cry is second-up on Saturday after a close fifth from a wide gate over the same distance at Warwick Farm on April 13, a run she can improve on from a better barrier this weekend.
Following closely in the Godolphin Crown betting markets at $5.50 is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Big Brown four-year-old Nancy.
One of three in the field for Team Snowden, she is drawn a treat in barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride on the back of her fourth to 2016 Hawkesbury Gold Cup hopeful Mighty Lucky over 1400m at Randwick on April 16.
Occupying the third line of betting at $7.50 are Joe Pride’s in-form Nadeem mare Ammirata (9) and Role Model who has the outside barrier (14) to overcome first-up.
Four-year-old Ammirata has won her past three starts going back to December including the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) two back in January.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained five-year-old Role Model is being kept safe in betting despite the wide barrier draw after a smart 1200m trial win at Randwick earlier in the month.
Drawn one on her inside and due to jump from barrier 13 with Jason Collett aboard is David Pfieffer’s rising eight-year-old Cradle Me.
The veteran daughter of Easy Rocking hasn’t won since Boxing Day when taking out the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m), and was last seen running fifth when beaten three lengths by the winner Two Blue on April 9 in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m).
She drops in class on Saturday for her 47th career start and from three runs over the distance has twice run second.
Rounding out the single figure hopes are the Snowden’s Group 1 performed Shamardal four-year-old Artistry ($9) coming off an eighth to Azkadellia in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes and the aforementioned Sapphire Stakes winner Two Blue ($9.50) for Wyong’s Kristen Buchanan.
At more generous odds are then the likes of Gerald Ryan’s early market mover Peace Force ($14) with the inside run from barrier one and the Lee Curtis-trained Press Report ($15) drawn one on her outside in gate two.
