Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Mick Kent has underlined the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse as the major target for Supido after the gelding produced another impressive effort for a fifth-consecutive win at Flemington on Monday.
Supido has returned to racing in blistering form this time; franking the form displayed at the conclusion of his 2015 campaign with an impressive first-up win over talented company in a Flemington sprint over 1100m on January 30th.
Repeating the dose at Moonee Valley three weeks later, the Sebring entire was charged with carrying 60kgs in the Phillip Schuler Handicap (1200m) on Monday but made light work of the talented and capacity field; hitting the line two lengths ahead of closest rival Illustrious Lad.
Kent has a very high opinion of Supido and is hopeful the horse will make the 2016 The Goodwood field; balloting being undoubtedly his biggest issue in competing against the country’s best this time.
“I think we all know he’s very smart,” Kent told AAP.
“I was actually going to run him in the Newmarket and on the Monday before he got a bit crook.
“I was hoping to run him last Saturday week but still wasn’t quite right and then I wanted to run him in the Bel Esprit Stakes on Saturday but he got balloted out.
“So he ended up in a Benchmark 84.
“We’re trying to get him into a nice race.
“I’m going to nominate for The Goodwood and that’s my aim. I’ll look at the weights and if I have to run him again, I’ll have to.
“Ideally I’d like to go straight in but I’ll have to weigh up whether he’s going to get a run or not. There seems to be quite a few horses heading that way.”
A lightly-raced five-year-old, Supido has posted five race wins from only seven competitive starts since first appearing on course during the 2014 Spring Carnival.
Running second in the Pancare Foundation Plate (1000m), Supido failed to fire when sixth in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) in only his second career start but responded with consecutive wins in the Cove Hotel Maiden Plate (1000m) and Dalray Handicap (1100m).
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early 2016 The Goodwood odds, for which Supido can be taken at a quote of $9 for success.
