This Monday at Flemington Racecourse two Black Types will highlight the ANZAC Day racing action including the ANZAC Day Stakes 2016 where the John O’Shea-trained Pyx Chamber will shoot for back-to-back wins.
Due to run as Flemington Race 2 at 1:35pm (AEST) on the eight-race card, this year’s $120,000 Listed ANZAC Day Stakes (1400m) field features 13 two-year-olds.
The top-rated of those is the Godolphin-raced Pyx Chamber who lines-up in his seventh career start having broken his maiden status last time out at Sandown-Hillside.
A nicely-bred son of Street Cry, Pyx Chamber enjoyed a one and a quarter-length victory in the $80,000 Ladbrokes Australia Handicap (1300m) on April 9 ahead of his Flemington and 1400m debut on Monday.
He’ll get things his way in the handicap clash from barrier one with Craig Williams aboard the 59kg top weight.
Following Pyx Chamber in the ANZAC Day Stakes weights this autumn is the Tony McEvoy-trained Mr Markou (58.5kg) jumping from a wider gate nine draw with Stephen Baster aboard.
The young Stryker gelding has had five starts to date for one win and three thirds, including behind She’s Positive in the Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on March 14.
His last start was in the Mornington Sires’ over 1500m on April 2 when two lengths away third to subsequent Group 1 Champagne Stakes seventh-placed Jaws Of Steel, so the 1400m on Monday should suit.
Three juveniles follow on 58kg with Robert Smerdon’s Star Witness colt Biased Witness coming off a Pakenham win on the synthetic, last start Warrnambool winner Invincible Al and the Ciaron Maher-trained Throssell who won at Bendigo on debut on April 9.
The horses that ran second and third to Pyx Chamber at Sandown earlier in the month are also both accepted for Monday’s rematch with October Tutu and Smart As You Think.
Dwayne Dunn rides the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Not A Single Doubt gelding October Tutu from barrier six who is looking to turn the tables on his last start conqueror.
Smart As You Think meanwhile is a daughter of former champion two-year-old So You Think, the filly having her second start from a nice gate four draw on Monday with Daniel Stackhouse replacing Brad Rawiller in the saddle.
The other most notable hope Damien Oliver’s mount River Goddess, the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained local Northern Meteor filly having a wide barrier (11) to overcome after her fourth in the Ladbrokes Australia Handicap last time out.
River Goddess drops from 55.5kg that run to 55kg on Monday, while the only two-year-old on the 54kg minimum in the stakes showdown is the Mick Sell-trained Madam Stryker.
