Sir Moments Tops 2016 Tails Stakes Field

Steven O’Dea’s in-form Brisbane galloper Sir Moments will defend his title in Saturday’s Tails Stakes 2016 at the Sunshine Coast Racecourse in Queensland.

Twelve months ago the son of Choisir took out the $100,000 Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) before a second to Leebaz in the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast next start.

He is back on the weekend shooting for back-to-back Tails Stakes victories, but has his first look at the Sunshine Coast track with last year’s race run at Doomben.

The five-year-old comes off good lead-up form this autumn under big weights including a win over 1350m at Doomben on April 9 carrying 60.5kg, half-a-kilo less than his hefty 61kg top weight in the Tails Stakes.

Paul Hammersley continues his association with Sir Moments on Saturday, the reigning champ drawn in barrier seven of 15.

O’Dea has also accepted for Dane Shadow six-year-old Kurtley who finished eighth behind his better-performed stablemate at Doomben last time out.

Following Sir Moments in the Tails Stakes field and weights this season are the Brian Smith-trained stablemates Jetset Lad (58.5kg) and Lock’s Legend (56.5kg) drawn in gates 12 and five respectively.

A rising nine-year-old, veteran Elusive City gelding Jetset Lad has his 65th career start on the weekend and is looking for his first win since the Listed Tatt’s Mile (1650m) in Brisbane last July.

He comes off a fourth to Sir Moments at Doomben when beaten only two lengths as a $21 roughie so is out to close that gap in Saturday’s rematch.

Lock’s Legend meanwhile is a six-year-old son of Bel Danoro who has had two starts at the Sunshine Coast for one win, his lead-up into Saturday being a close third over 1630m at Doomben on April 2 with 58kg on his back.

Winner of the same race Lock’s Legend comes from, the Stewart Mackinnon-trained Pins eight-year-old My Quilter is also accepted for the Tails Stakes rematch this weekend and is the only other last start winner outside of Sir Moments in the field.

Locally trained on the Sunshine Coast the 60-start warhorse showed he still had winning form in him with the one and three-quarter length success in Brisbane at the start of the month.

He carried only 51kg that day, but is still well-weighted in the Tails Stakes getting in on the 54kg minimum with apprentice Sarah Eilbeck retaining the ride.

My Quilter has had 18 starts at the course for six wins, three seconds and three thirds so has the home course advantage.

He has drawn wide in the outside alley 15 however, but did overcome gate 12 of 12 to win his last start so still looks right in it.

Also drawn wide on Saturday is the Chris Munce-trained Perplexity (14) who has Jeff Lloyd aboard third-up, the Lonhro six-year-old looking to atone for back-to-back ninths this time in, and the returning Shotover River (13).

Prepared by John & Chris Meagher, Savabeel gelding Shotover River has had five runs at the Sunshine Coast for a strong record of two wins and a third.

He won here in early January over 2200m before a fourth to Onging Venture at the same track / distance a fortnight later.

He has been freshened-up since and runs well first-up (7-0-2-2), but will only improve on what he does on Saturday as he steps out over more distance this campaign.

Brisbane’s premier horseman Robert Heathcote, of Buffering fame, is in the Tails Stakes this year with Bewhatyouwannabe in barrier two with Michael Cahill continuing his association with the Fastnet Rock gelding.

He has the same record at the track as Shotover River (5-2-1-0) and was last seen crossing under two lengths away third to his main danger on Saturday, Sir Moments, at Doomben earlier in the month.
