The nominations for Flemington’s Anzac Day public holiday meeting on Monday are now out including those for the Anzac Day Stakes 2016, one of two black-types on the program.
This season’s $120,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) attracted 18 two-year-olds including four last start winners.
Among those looking to string together multiple wins is the John O’Shea-trained Pyx Chamber for the Godolphin stable, the well-tried juvenile also the highest-rated of the nominees.
A nicely-bred son of Street Cry, the progressive colt has had six starts to date breaking his maiden status last time out with a 1300m win at Sandown-Hillside on April 9.
He is yet to race at Flemington, but looks set to handle the 1400m without a worry in his first stakes assignment.
Second to Pyx Chamber last time out in the $80,000 Ladbrokes Australia Handicap (1300m), the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Not A Single Doubt gelding October Tutu is also nominated for Monday’s rematch over the extra 100m on Monday.
Another last start winner nominated for the feature is the Robert Smerdon-trained Star Witness colt Biased Witness having saluted by two and a half lengths over 1200m on April 17 at Pakenham on the Synthetic track.
Also coming off a win and high up the ratings is the Ciaron Maher-trained Captain Sonador gelding Thorossell who won his debut over 1000m at Bendigo on April 9, meaning he’ll have to handle a notable step up in class and distance if accepted into the Anzac Day Stakes field.
Maher has a total of three entries also nominating for Styleman who ran second on debut to Invincible Al at Warrnambool in late March and the unraced Hinchinbrook colt Beach Life.
There are four fillies nominated to take on the boys in the Listed clash this Anzac Day including the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained local River Goddess coming off a fourth to Pyx Chamber and third in the same race Smart As You Think who is a beautifully bred daughter of former star juvenile So You Think.
Other notable hopes in the mix for the capacity 16-starter field include the Greg Eurell-trained Fontein Lad who is black-type performed having run seventh to Missrock in Caulfield’s Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) during the spring and Mr Markou who ran third in Morphettville’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic in mid-March.
