Arcadia Dream wins 2016 WATC Derby

Perth’s leading jockey William Pike claimed his sixth win in the Group 2 $400,000 Schweppes W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) at Ascot in Perth last Saturday with a perfectly timed run on Arcadia Dream.

Pike had settled Arcadia Dream near the tail of the field in the early stages of the WATC Derby and when the speed quickened mid race it was going to suit the backmarkers.

The multiple premiership winning jockey waited patiently until heads were turned for home before making his move on the Grant Williams trained filly.

Pike eased his way off the fence on the filly and found clear space at the 300m and under hard riding Arcadia Dream ($4.80) was able to peg back Who Dat Singa ($3.90) who has shot away with what looked like a winning break, to score a neck win.

The $2.25 favourite Kia Ora Koutou also settled near the tail of the field and was doing his best work over the concluding stages to run into fourth spot, four lengths from the winner.

Pike had decided to stick with Arcadia Dream in the WATC Derby even though the pair were beaten at their previous start when second to stablemate First Impressions in the Group 3 $250,000 Kirin Megumi W.A. Oaks (2400m) at Ascot on April 2.

Prominent West Australian owner Bob Peters collected his eighth WATC Derby trophy but was slightly concerned before the race if Arcadia Dream would run out a strong 2400m.

“I was a little bit concerned about her getting the distance,” Peters said.

“Obviously the way the race was run did suit her.

“She was caught in the Oaks out and without cover…things just didn’t work out for her.”

Arcadia Dream will now have a week in the paddock before trying to emulate the  deeds of the Peters owned Delicacy who after winning the 2015 WATC Derby headed to Adelaide to claim the Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) and the Group 1 $500,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville.

“It is big boots for her to fill, but she has pulled up well,” Peters said.

“She will have a week in the paddock at home and we will keep an eye on her.

“First Impressions is OK and she might go as well.”
