Yattarna Scores Upset 2016 JHB Carr Stakes Result

Jockey Glyn Schofield described the JHB Carr Stakes 2016 win of the James Cummings-trained roughie shot Yattarna as a burglary at Royal Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day, the honest filly tripling her value with the black-type win in Sydney.

The field and betting for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 J H B Carr Stakes (1200m) was dominated by the John O’Shea-trained Pearls who ran second in the PJ Bell the run before.

But like Old North in the previous race, another Godolphin-raced favourite was beaten with Pearls sluggish from the gates and never travelling like a winner.

She got shuffled well back in the run and failed to come into contention in a clash that was dominated by Cummings’ paddock-bound daughter of Exceed And Excel.

Last time out Yattarna was beaten over 1350m in a Bench Mark 72 at Wyong, and Cummings considered sending her straight out for a spell.

She went around terrifically in a track galloper last Saturday morning however, convincing connections including Dato Tan Chin Nam’s Think Big Stud to send her around once more for a shot at a black-type win.

“The filly was nearly going to the paddock,” Cummings said after the win.

“But we saved her up and let her go around in a good gallop last Saturday.

“I knew that win, lose or draw she’d be in the paddock after today.

“But the way she pinged out…she won the jobe easily in another very good ride from Glyn (Schofield).”

Yattarna jumped $34 in JHB Carr Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, but jumped out of the gates like a filly that was keen to be there, getting across from the outside alley to take up front running.

Up the front is exactly where she stayed the entire race, Yattarna relishing the Slow track and her first look at 1400m to lead-all-the-way and steal the show.

In a photo for the minor placings it was the Stephen Marsh-trained New Zealand raider No More Tears ($11), out to atone for her dead last when 14th to Two Blue at Randwick in last Saturday’s Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m), who snared second on the inside.

Finishing off the JHB Carr Stakes trifecta in a close third was the Bjorn Baker-trained daughter of Snippetson Lady Sniper ($6) who was ridden right up on the speed by jockey Blake Shinn.

“She did a really good job,” winning hoop Schofield said of Yattarna.

“She jumped quickly from the outside, got across and controlled the race.

“She relished the conditions and relished being left alone in front.

“She got away with a race that she probably burgled today.

“But hopefully she develops a bit more.”

Cummings was just thrilled to get the black-type win on the record for connections.

“A horse like Yattarna has done a great job for her owners,” he said.

“She’s tripled her value today, that’s outstanding.”
