2016 Frank Packer Plate Results: He’s Our Rokkii Beats Old North

It was an upset Frank Packer Plate 2016 result in the first Group race at Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day in Sydney with the improving David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained He’s Our Rokkii beating home the short-priced favourite Old North.

Options are wide open with the progressive Roc De Cambes three-year-old He’s Our Rokkii after the gelding made it back-to-back wins with success in the $150,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on the back of his victory in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at the same track on April 2.

In his first look at further than a mile, He’s Our Rokkii showed enormous staying potential with the team looking at possibly extending him right out to 2400m later in his career.

It was the filly Zasorceress up front where she likes to be and leading the Frank Packer Plate field around the famous Randwick track this year, with the John O’Shea-trained favourite and last start Tulloch Stakes winner Old North tracking fourth one out and one back.

Following in fifth on the back of the top fancies’ heels was the Dwayne Dunn-ridden He’s Our Rokkii who landed in a beautiful spot.

On the straight Old North was cursing up behind the leaders, while the Chris Waller-trained Pins colt Torgersen also started to move off the fence and up closer in the run.

With 200m left to travel Old North and jockey James McDonald briefly hit the front before a late charge by He’s Our Rokkii ($6) who was travelling better and overtook, pulling away to win.

Old North ($2.15) had no excuses running second with Torgersen ($8.50) crossing third on the back of a 10th to Tavago in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) last start.

“He landed in a beautiful spot,” Dunn said post-win.

“We’ve got a few things in mind, whether he gets 2400m later in his life.

“So I was mindful of being on top of him in the run.

“He really lifted and put the sword to them.

“Hopefully we have a big spring with him.

“He’s doing really well…but he still has a touch of learning to do.”

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig said the options were now open and whether they sent the horse out for a spell ahead of a spring return or pressed onto a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with him had to be decided.

“He’s a horse that keeps improving,” Dabernig said.

“He’s only lightly raced and I think he was very solid today.

“He ran out a really solid 2000m so that opens up some more doors for him.

“We’re a touch undecided where we’ll go with him now.

“Originally we were planning of backing off until the spring, but now it’s tempting to head north or to look at Adelaide even.

“He’s done a fantastic job and I’m thrilled to have him in our stable.”
