A full field of three-year-old fillies will face off in Saturday’s JHB Carr Stakes 2016 at Randwick Racecourse, betting tips and the latest odds on the All Aged Stakes Day showdown found below.
Set to run as Randwick Race 4 at 1:50pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kari JHB Carr Stakes (1400m) features 13 runners led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by the John O’Shea-trained Pearls ($3.40).
Drawn in barrier six, coming into five if the first emergency Top Of My List (3) fails to gain a run, the Godolphin-raced daughter of Exceed And Excel is best known for her Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) win at the track and distance last September.
Fourth in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) next time out, she has failed to reach quite the same heights this time in.
Two back she crossed 10th to Peeping in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) before running an improved second in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last start on April 2.
Three of her rivals are also at single-figures in JHB Carr Stakes betting for Saturday including Denmagic ($5), the David Pfieffer-trained daughter of Denman out to atone for a ninth in the PJ Bell.
The other best in betting are Bjorn Baker’s recent Gosford Guineas winner Lady Sniper ($7) having her first look at further than 1200m and the rails-drawn Tremezzina ($8.50) from the in-form stables of Chris Waller.
So will one of the runners under $10 get the job done or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained grey Tap This ($10), New Zealand raider No More Tears ($13) who comes off a last in the Sapphire Stakes from last weekend or Heartlings ($13) with a wide gate to overcome?
#1 Pearls ($3.40)
She is the favourite and rightfully so, and we don’t see Pearls getting rolled here. A Group 2 winner and Group 1 performer, she has one of the season’s top hoops McDonald staying aboard after a strong PJ Bell second last start. She was beaten only a half-length that run and is proven over 1400m so well appreciate the step up in distance.
#7 Tremezzina ($8.50)
Waller knows how to train a winner and this filly has the Waller factor. She also has the inside run from barrier one, Tim Clark the late alteration to ride, and the alley will give the daughter of Not A Single Doubt a boost. She won over the distance at Kembla Grange two back and comes off a second at Warwick Farm over the same metres from April 6. The distance is spot on, now she just needs to handle this class.
#10 Tap This ($10)
In an open market, this Snowden-trained fill is a strong chance after she hit the line strongly to win over 1200m at Wyong on March 30. She drops from 58kg that day to 54kg at set weights plus penalties on Saturday and should fly under those kilos with Blake Spriggs aboard from the good gate. Her last Group start was in September last year when 1.2 lengths off the winner in the Ming Dynasty at this track and distance, form she can repeat here for a top three finish against her own kind.
