Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Frank Packer Plate 2016 runs at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday as part of the All Aged Stakes Day action in Sydney, betting tips for the three-years-old staying showdown found below.
Originally this year’s $150,000 Group 3 TJS Frank Packer Plate (2000m) attracted 11 runners, but the field is down to 10 after the early scratching of Ron Door Reggie (1).
Hot favourite in Frank Packer Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.05 for the win is Old North, the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt coming off a Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) win over the same distance at Rosehill from March 26.
Flying Sydney-based hoop James McDonald retains the ride this weekend, Old North after his second win from as many starts at the Randwick track.
The other major players are the other O’Shea-trained hopeful Asinara ($4.20) who comes off an unplaced Vinery Stud Stakes run and the market mover He’s Our Rokkii ($6.50 into $5.50) who won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on April 2 at Randwick.
So can Old North secure back-to-back 2000m wins this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival or is there value outside the favourite in the Frank Packer Plate markets?
#1 Old North ($2.05)
This Godolphin-raced youngster is in ace form and while he’s short in betting, the lead-up is too good to ignore. He had plenty to spare on the line over this distance at Sydney’s other track (Rosehill) late last month so is proven over the 2000m, a big plus. McDonald retains the ride, the horse is also proven at Randwick and is the one to beat.
#2 Torgerson ($9)
Nice odds on offer for this Chris Waller-trained Pins colt who drops in class after the ATC Derby 10th last time out. That was over the mile and a half, and dropping back to 2000m should suit. His other run at the distance was the second to Old North in the Tulloch Stakes, form he’s looking to return to here. One of the carnival’s best Hugh Bowman jumps on and the galloper is drawn a treat in gate three (into two).
#11 Zasorceress ($26)
Going for a roughie to fill the last placing, Jason Warren’s Zabeel filly in good form and looking for her first win at career start number seven. She might be a maiden, but she caught the eye when a close third in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) against her own kind at this track and distance at the start of the month. She missed an Oaks start as an emergency, but with form here can surprise at a big price.
