Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne is host to the Anniversary Vase 2016 this Saturday, betting tips for the handicap clash detailed below.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEST), this year’s $120,000 Listed TROA Anniversary Vase (1400m) attracted a full field plus emergencies.
The first of those emergencies, Master Reset, gets a run from a gun barrier two draw coming in to replace early scratching Guest Of Honour (17).
Leading the latest Anniversary Vase odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the John Sadler-trained Charmed Harmony at $5.50 who will carry the 60kg top weight from a wide draw on Saturday.
Apprentice Thomas Sadler retains the ride on the Hussonet six-year-old who he rode to second behind Black Heart Bart at Caulfield in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) last start on March 23.
That was his eighth run at the Caulfield track where he boasts two wins and two seconds to date heading into Saturday’s feature.
Four other runners are also under $10 for the win in Anniversary Vase betting including early market mover Dan Zephyr ($7 into $6).
Pat Carey’s Danbird five-year-old has an excellent 1400m record with four wins and a third from nine runs over the distance, and is back up to the metres after a close last start third to Thermal Current in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington when beaten only a quarter-length on April 2.
The other best fancied include the Michael Moroney-trained Yesterday’s Songs ($7) drawn well in barrier three and Tony McEvoy’s Commands six-year-old Jimando ($7.50) coming off a fourth in the Victoria Handicap.
So do the bookies have it right or is there value tipping a longer priced hopeful for an Anniversary Vase upset such as the Matt Laurie-trained Mildura Cup runner-up Master Reset ($11), Stratum mare Enquare ($12) or Charge Forward four-year-old Fast Cash ($13)?
#4 Dan Zephyr ($6)
The early money is coming for this Mornington-trained Danbird five-year-old who is a specialist at the distance and who has winning form over the 1400m at Caulfield from February. Carrying more weight this time, but definitely still at a manageable weight with the 55kg. Third in black-type company last start beaten narrowly and is flying.
#8 Precious Gem ($8.50)
Good price on offer for the Henry Dwyer-trained mare who was runner-up in the same race Dan Zephyr crossed third in from April 2. She is yet to win from six Caulfield assignments to date, but should be improving off that run stepping up in distance, which she last saw for a win over Burning Front at Flemington in December. Is drawn wide, but has time to overcome the barrier and gets in on the 54kg minimum.
#1 Charmed Harmony ($5.50)
Lots of boxes ticked by the favourite who just needs to handle the weight and the gate. No favours from the handicaps or with the draw, but the Group 3 second over the track and distance last time out was eye-catching, is a Group 3 winner over 1500m from the spring and has been competitive with big kilos before. Loves the track too (8-2-3-0) and 1400m is ideal (15-7-2-0).
