Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The All Aged Stakes 2016 steals the show in Sydney on Saturday afternoon and while there may only be eight in the mix for the weight-for-age feature at Royal Randwick, it is shaping up as a cracking edition.
Set to run as Randwick Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST), this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have five in the field under $10 for the win in a wide open affair.
Current $3.60 favourite in the All Aged Stakes odds is the Chris Waller-trained Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement.
He jumps from barrier six with the in-form Hugh Bowman booked for the ride on the Hinchbrook colt whose lead-up runs include a Randwick Guineas second as the beaten favourite and the third to the world’s best Winx in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) from March 19.
Following closely are the likes of fellow three-year-old English ($4.60) for the race’s most successful trainer Gai Waterhouse and the current 2016 Stradbroke Handicap favourite Malaguerra ($4.20) who is also the All Aged Stakes market mover backed in from an earlier quote of $4.60.
So will Press Statement win another Group 1 on Saturday or is there value tipping an upset All Aged Stakes result from the likes of Waller’s other runner Kermadec ($6.50) or the Darren Weir-trained Newmarket Handicap runner-up Black Heart Bart ($6)?
#6 Press Statement ($3.60)
There are plenty of livewire hopes in the field, but it is hard to look past the current favourite. Favourites have a gun recent record in the race and think this in-form three-year-old can continue the punters’ luck here. He was brave when third in the WFA George Ryder last start and has had the good little freshen-up since. Bowman is in form also and is aboard here, Press Statement boasting an excellent 90% place rate and two-from-three record over the 1400m he’s down to on Saturday.
#1 Kermadec ($6.50)
Willing forgive Kermadec the Doncaster failure last start, and think this horse can bounce back stepping back to 1400m on Saturday. The classy four-year-old has a great record at Randwick (7-2-2-1) and there were plenty of excuses last start. He’s passed fit since and is out to atone in a smaller field at a good price.
#7 English ($4.60)
Waterhouse has trained more All Aged Stakes winners than any other trainer and her smart filly English is a genuine hope of adding to the trophy cabinet this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. She’s drawn in gate seven with Sam Clipperton in the saddle, the Encosta De Lago filly two-from-four at the track and coming off the brave third to Chautauqua in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) from a wide barrier 14 of 15 draw.
