Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The key support act on the Morphettville card this Saturday in South Australia is the Port Adelaide Guineas 2016 for three-year-olds, Howard Be Thy Name currently leading betting on the set weights clash.
Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:23pm on the Breeders’ Stakes Day card, this year’s $100,000 Listed Marsh Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) originally drew a final field of 19 young stayers.
The early scratching of the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Royal Rumble who had drawn barrier 18 however leaves 18 in the mix.
Favourite of those in the latest Port Adelaide Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $5.50 for the win is the Darren Weir-trained Howard Be Thy Name.
Due to jump from a good barrier six draw, the ultra-consistent Redoute’s Choice colt has had eight starts so far and is yet to finish worse than third.
Two back he travelled to Hobart and finished second in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m), before the Wangoom-based up-and-comer’s last start win over the mile at Pakenham on March 31.
He’s yet to step out further than 1600m, but is in top form and set weights suit.
Hot on his heels in the current Port Adelaide Guineas betting markets at $6 is the rails-drawn Hardern prepared by Mornington’s David Brideoake.
The Hard Spun gelding gets the inside run from barrier one with apprentice Dylan Dunn booked for the ride for the third time on the trot.
Two back the duo were third to Tally in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley as a $61 chance before a last start third over 2000m at Caulfield on March 26.
The step back to 1800m here should suit, Hardern last seeing the distance when fifth to Tally in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) in late February.
The next best in betting is the in-form Mail It In ($6.50) drawn wide in barrier 15 for jockey Jason Holder to overcome.
One of two remaining runners for Macdonald & Gluyas, the Reset gelding comes off a win over 1550m at Morphettville Parks and is yet to race over further than that.
He had a big four and a quarter-length margin to spare on the line last start however suggesting he’ll get further without a worry, and chases his first win from six starts at the Morphetville track.
Rounding out the single figure Port Adelaide Guineas hopes this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival at $7 each are Colonel Cluster and Burton drawn in gates seven and 14 respectively.
One of South Australia’s best hoops Dom Tourneur has the ride on the Phillip Stokes-trained Colonel Cluster whose last start produced a second to Mail It In, while Burton is another Brideoake-trained hope coming off a Ballarat win over the mile.
Pins gelding Burton blitzed the field in Victoria on April 3 saluting over the 1600m by an impressive 11 lengths and will only be better advantaged by the step up to 1800m on the weekend in Adelaide.
Other notable hopes in the mix at more generous odds include the Michael Moroney-trained War Legend ($13) and the early market mover Patch Adams ($17 into $16) with the outside barrier to overcome.
