Terrubi Tops 2016 JRA Plate Field & Weights

Kris Lees’ English import Terrubi will carry top weight for his Australian race debut this Saturday at Royal Randwick in the JRA Plate 2016 on All Aged Stakes Day.

Set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:25pm (AEDT) as the penultimate event on the bumper nine-race program, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Sharp Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) has drawn a capacity field of 13 starters plus four emergencies.

Allocated 59kg and drawn in gate nine for jockey Brenton Avdulla is the now Newcastle-based Dalakhani six-year-old Terrubi.

The grey stallion is only lightly-raced for his age with three wins and six other minor placings from 10 starts, his latest a dead last when 11th behind Our Ivanhowe in a Group 1 over the mile and a half in September of 2014.

It has been over a year between runs then for the proven Group 2 winning stayer, Lees looking to get the Australian Bloodstock-owned import back to form down under starting in Saturday’s handicap clash.

The next heaviest-weighted JRA Plate acceptor with 58kg is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Messene in gate 11 with Dwayne Dunn booked to ride the rising eight-year-old son of Lonhro.

From two previous runs over 2000m Messene has twice run second.

Two back he was beaten a nose by Sir John Hawkwood in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) before a similarly close effort behind It’s Somewhat on March 26 in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) by the Railway Stakes runner-up in Perth last November.

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller dominates the JRA Plate field numbers-wise saddling up six starters and the second emergency Magicool.

Included in the Waller contingent are Moriarty, Beyond Thankful, Hawkspur, Index Linked, Weary and Sadler’s Lake.

The outside alley in the race belongs this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival to the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Guardini who comes off a second to Leebaz in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) over the same distance at Caulfield.

The sole last start winner in the mix is the John O’Shea-trained Havana Cooler, a six-year-old son of Hurricane Run who took out the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) late last month.

Third to Magic Hurricane in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at the Randwick track last October, the gelding has his first run at the track since and is one-from-two over the 2000m.

Also in the mix are the rails-drawn Doncaster Prelude third placed Red Dazzler gelding Rudy from the Gold Coast who was ninth last start behind Winx in the Doncaster Mile and Casino Dancer out to improve on her 12th to Azkadellia in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) last Saturday.
