Pearls Heads 2016 JHB Carr Stakes Field

John O’Shea’s smart filly Pearls will carry the number one saddlecloth when she looks to break a winning drought in Saturday’s JHB Carr Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick Racecourse on All Aged Stakes Day.

Set to run as Randwick Race 4 at 1:50pm (AEDT), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kari JHB Carr Stakes (1400m) has attracted a capacity field of 13 three-year-old fillies plus three emergencies.

Heading the field is the Godolphin-raced daughter of Exceed And Excel Pearls who hasn’t won a race since the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at the track and distance in September last year.

She backed-up from that to finish under a length away fourth to Speak Fondly in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), her only elite level run since being a 10th to Peeping in Rosehill’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 12.

Pearls appreciate a drop back in class and distance next run finishing second in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) on April 2 at Randwick where she returns this weekend looking to go one better again.

There is just one last start winner accepted for the JHB Carr Stakes field this season, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Tap This coming off a 1200m Wyong success from late last month ahead of her first black-type start since a fifth in September’s Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m).

Team Snowden have also accepted for Denpurr drawn wide in barrier 12 (possibly into nine) and Stratum filly Brigadoon Rise with a more favourable gate two draw on Saturday.

Over from New Zealand and out to atone for a disappointing Australia debut is the Stephen Marsh-trained Darci Brahma filly No More Tears.

She won a Group 3 at home in early March before finishing last when 14th to Two Blue in last Saturday’s Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Also out to improve on a below-par finish last start is the Kerry Parker-trained Pendragon filly Heartlings who was third last when 12th to Single Gaze in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on March 26 at Rosehill.

Other notable hopes include Clarry Conners’ Ethereal Stakes winner over 2000m on Caulfield Cup Day last year Dawnie Perfect, this autumn’s Gosford Guineas winner Lady Sniper and the in-form Chris Waller-trained Tremezzina stepping up in class.

The emergencies in the field are the Anthony Cummings-trained stablemates Top Of My List (3) and Not A Cherry (7) as well as recent Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) winning Snitzel filly Perignon (9).

Tim Clark is on standby for the ride aboard the Gerald Ryan-trained third emergency who is a dual acceptor on the card.

The JHB Carr Stakes was a back-up option for the filly who ran third in the Flight Stakes last season, Perignon one of eight runners in Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m).

She comes off a 13th to Tempt Me Not in the PJ Bell Stakes having failed to get through the Soft (6) track from her wide barrier 14 of 16 draw that day and should be able to improve on firmer ground this weekend.
