Perignon Tops 2016 JHB Carr Stakes Nominations

Gerald Ryan’s recent Group 2 winner Perignon is the highest-rated of the three-year-old fillies nominated for the JHB Carr Stakes 2016 on All Aged Stakes Day in Sydney on Saturday.

Run at Royal Randwick Racecourse, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kari JHB Carr Stakes (1400m) attracted 21 nominations on Monday including Perignon who is looking to bounce back off two recent losses.

Three back in mid-February at Randwick she won the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) in her first run since crossing third to Speak Fondly in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at the track in the spring.

She ran third next-up in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m), before things went amiss from a wide barrier (14 of 16) when 13th to Tempt Me Not in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m).

Ryan has a total of four JHB Carr Stakes nominees this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with Perignon joined by stablemates Girl Sunday, Cartier Rock and Muzyka who was third in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last Derby Day.

Just two of the fillies come off a last start win with the Michael Kent-trained Abbey Marie who took out her debut over 1300m at Sandown-Lakeside on March 23 and Tap This for Peter & Paul Snowden.

Grey Tapit filly Tap This won at Wyong over 1200m carrying 58kg and is one of five Team Snowden-trained entries for Saturday’s Group 3 feature.

The father and son training duo have also entered Stratum filly Brigadoon Rise, the out-of-form Denpurr, consistent Street Cry filly Maraam stepping up in class and Regatta Rebel.

Higher up the ratings is the Bjorn Baker-trained daughter of Snippetson Lady Sniper who won the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) two back over Kimberly Star.

Lady Sniper also raced in the PJ Bell Stakes on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ and finished sixth.

The best out of that race and nominated for the weekend’s clash is the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel filly Pearls who crossed a half-length away for second.

Fourth in the Flight Stakes, Pearls is the sole Godolphin hope in the JHB Carr this season.

Further looking to frank the three-year-old form coming out of New Zealand this autumn meanwhile is the Stephen Marsh-trained Darci Brahma filly No More Tears.

A fortnight back Tavago won the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) over the locals before last Saturday saw the Marsh-trained Sofia Rosa win the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m).

Marsh returns with No More Tears this weekend, the Group 3 winner back home out to atone for her last when 14th behind Two Blue in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) last Saturday on Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day.

See below for the full JHB Carr Stakes 2016 nominations, the capacity field of 13 final acceptors and barriers due out on Wednesday morning.
