The $150,000 Group 3 Sharp Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) is a quality handicap clash for staying types, a host of quality runners vying for a spot in the capacity 13-starter field this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The highest-rated of the nominees in the handicaps is the John O’Shea-trained It’s Somewhat who raced just last Saturday for a brave sixth behind winning mare Lucia Valentina in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

That followed the Dynaformer five-year-old’s previous win in Rosehill’s Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m), his first success over the distance he could see again on a quick back-up into Saturday.

O’Shea and Godolphin have also nominated for Havana Cooler, a consistent Hurricane Run six-year-old coming off a win in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) from March 26.

Third to Magic Hurricane last October in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick, the import will appreciate the extra metres this weekend second-up.

Third in the Doncaster Prelude beaten only three-quarters of a length by Havana Cooler was the Helen Page-trained Rudy from the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The Red Dazzler five-year-old raced again in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 2, but could only manage to run ninth to Winx as a $51 shot.

Winx’s trainer Chris Waller has an imposing seven JRA Plate nominations this season including his former Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur and Astronomer Royal grey Weary last seen running sixth to The United States in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on March 19.

Coming off a better lead-up run are the likes of Lee & Anthony Freedman’s import Guardini who ran second in Caulfield’s Easter Cup late last month and the Team Hawkes-trained Messene.

A rising eight-year-old son of Lonhro, Messene was runner-up behind Sir John Hawkwood in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) on March 12 before running second again to It’s Somewhat in the Neville Sellwood beaten only a quarter length last start.

Last year’s JRA Plate winning stable Peter & Paul Snowden have just the one entry this year in Disclaimer who was dead last over 1350m at Rosehill last start.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig meanwhile have New Approach gelding Bold Sniper nominated for his Sydney debut in the race on the back of a number of unplaced Melbourne runs.

The six-year-old’s last start at Albury on March 17 produced a seventh of nine runners with 59kg on his back, the Queen Elizabeth-owned set to appreciate the drop back in weight this weekend.

“He had a huge weight, got back and never really came into it,” co-trainer Dabernig told AAP this week.

“He hasn’t won for a while. I thought a couple of his runs in the spring were acceptable and then he sort of trained off on us a bit. We’ll probably be going up there more hoping than confident, but you never know.”
