James Cummings’ perennial placegetter Prized Icon is favourite in Fernhill Handicap 2016 betting to break his maiden status in the first at Royal Randwick on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ this weekend.
Kicking off the bumper 10-race card at 11:30am (AEDT), this year’s $150,000 Listed TFE Hotels Fernhill Handicap (1600m) features a final field of eight two-year-olds.
A traditional lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) back at the track Saturday week, a double that hasn’t been achieved since Dracula (1998), the Fernhill Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have More Than Ready colt Prized Icon as the $2.80 top fancy.
He has had five runs to date for two seconds and three thirds, his latest run producing a second to Attention at Rosehill in the Group 3 Baillieu Handicap (1400m) on March 26.
Saturday is his fourth run at Randwick where he last finished second to subsequent Golden Slipper fourth placegetter and Inglis Sires’ runner-up Telperion in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) in mid-February, form the bookies are tipping to further stand up this Saturday.
In an open Fernhill Handicap betting market there are three other single figure hopes including Reinforced ($3.60) and Obscura ($3.70).
Prized Icon and his hoop Hugh Bowman give the weight away carrying 58kg, with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Reinforced the second heaviest weighted with 55.5kg.
Drawn well in barrier three for jockey Blake Shinn, Snitzel colt Reinforced won at Wyong early last month before a ninth in the Baillieu he is out to improve on this weekend.
Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea prepares third favourite Obscura, the son of Street Cry also a Baillieu graduate having run under 1.5 lengths away fifth from a wide barrier 14 of 14 draw as a $71 outsider in betting.
The other hope under $10 for the black-type win on Saturday is the early market mover Crown Him ($7.50 into $7), the Anthony Cummings-trained Casino Prince gelding fourth in the same lead-up beaten only a length.
Also in the mix and the other best in betting at $13 for the upset is Team Snowden’s other runner, Sebring colt Gravitate who is as yet untested in stakes’ company.
Rounding out the field and markets are then the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Sebring filly Bring Me The Bling ($26), the rails-drawn Beneteau filly Lasqueti Spirit ($26) for Rosehill’s Lee Curtis and the $31 roughie of the line-up Hutcho who Dwayne Dunn is booked to ride.
