Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In-form three-year-old Japonisme returns to Sydney for the first time this season jumping favourite in Saturday’s Arrowfield 3YO Sprint 2016 at Randwick Racecourse on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’.
One of the key support acts on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day card outside the meeting’s four Group 1 features, this year’s $500,000 Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) features a full field of three-year-olds.
To wear the number one saddlecloth and dominating Arrowfield 3YO Sprint betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Chris Waller-trained son of Choisir Japonisme at a current quote of $3.30.
Waller won the race last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with Delectation (2015) and is back shooting for more success with his Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner over the distance in Melbourne last spring.
Since then Japonisme has had three autumn runs all in Melbourne in Group 1 class against older rivals for a Lightning Stakes third, Newmarket Handicap fifth and last start third to Flamberge in Moonee Valley’s Manikato Stakes on March 24.
His last Sydney run was a third to Exosphere in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) last October and coming back against his own age on Saturday has him as the one to beat in barrier seven.
Hugh Bowman has the ride and is also in top form, Japonisme possibly starting from gate six if the emergency runner Spieth (5) fails to gain a start.
Following Japonisme in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint odds are just two other single figure hopes with Petits Filous ($4.60) and Hellbent ($8.50) who had mixed luck with the barriers drawing gates 13 and 1 respectively.
The best fancied of the four fillies taking on the boys in the field, the Ciaron Maher-trained Petits Filous might be drawn wide but she comes off a first-up win at Caulfield.
The Group 3 winning daughter of Street Boss is yet to race at the track, but has lost just once in her six career starts when under four lengths off Buffering for a Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) 10th last October, and has Damien Oliver aboard on the weekend.
Hellbent is a Blake Shinn ride with the inside run on Saturday, the Kurt Goldman-trained I Am Invincible colt returning to racing having last run at Flemington in mid-January winning the Inglis Dash (1100m).
He has since trialled at Rosehill for a nice win over Spill The Beans over 1030m on March 29 and looks spot on to continue his undefeated first-up record (2-2-0-0).
Outside the hopes under $10 for the win are a number of other livewire chances out for the upset including Counterattack ($11), Spill The Beans ($11) and Kinglike ($12).
Craig Williams rides Waller’s other hope Counterattack from barrier nine, the Redoute’s Choice colt third to Japonisme in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and third to Spill The Beans first-up in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) in early February.
His last start was a fifth in the Listed Darby Murno Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19 when beaten only 1.4 lengths.
Gerald Ryan’s Eskimo Prince Stakes winner Spill The Beans should get a gun run from two on Saturday as the Snitzel colt looks to return to winning form following a fourth to Press Statement in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in February.
His stablemate Kinglike jumps one wider from barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy aboard the Exceed And Excel colt who was runner-up to English in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick before failing to beat home any other runner for a 12th in the William Reid in Melbourne last time out.
