2016 Schweppes Oaks Bid for Miss Cooper

The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained filly Miss Cooper could be Adelaide-bound this May to target the Schweppes Oaks 2016 at Morphettville Racecourse.

The nicely-bred daughter of Medaglia D’Oro is back in work and had a strong hit-out at Werribee on Monday morning behind the Tony McEvoy-trained Group 1 placed Alpine Eagle.

It was enough to impress co-trainer Zahra who is excited to step the dual winner up into black-type company for the first time this campaign.

“She had a short break up at Yungaburra. She had about three weeks up there. We brought her back in, she jumped out nice,” Zahra told Racing Victoria.

Miss Cooper has had a dozen starts to date but is yet to be tested in stakes class.

Her last run was on December 30 at Sandown-Lakeside in a Benchmark 64 for fillies and mares over a mile, which she won by a half-length with Katelyn Mallyon in the saddle.

First-up her trainers are looking at a 1400m run on Saturday in either the Super Vobis Three-Years-Old Handicap or Super Vobis Three-Years-Old Fillies Handicap against her own kind at Sandown-Hillside before going to a mile second-up.

“We’ll step her out Saturday over 1400m, or wait another week and go to the mile, so we’ll see how she pulls up out of this morning,” Zahra said on Monday.

How she performs in those early runs will determine whether they extend her out past 1600m for the first time with the $400,000 Group Australasian Oaks (2000m) on May 7 in mind.

“It’s always been our long-term goal,” Zahra confirmed.

New stable acquisition Flamberge could also be South Australia-bound despite his dead last when 15th to Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) in Sydney last Saturday.

The former Peter Moody-trained galloper won last year’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville and a title defence in the half-a-million-dollar sprint classic could again be on the cards for the Exceed And Excel six-year-old.
