The James Cummings trained filly Tempt Me Not scored an upset win in the Group 3 $200,000 Dilmah Tea P J Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick today.
Winning jockey Glen Schofield had Tempt Me Not ($16) out of her wide gate quickly and took up a spot with leaders in the early and middle stages.
Schofield still had alp full of horse at the top of the rise and when he let her go Tempt Me Not put on a winning break before holding off the fast finishing Pearls ($18).
The well supported Egyptian Symbol ($5) also ran on late for Brenton Avdulla to fill third spot while the $4.80 favourite Super Cash wound up in fifth spot.
Tempt Me Not was having her first run since March 5 when she ran sixth in the Listed $125,000 Fireball Stakes (1100m) at Randwick but Cummings had her primed for today’s race with a slick barrier trial win at Warwick Farm on March 22.
“We put ourselves in a really good position here, the filly a month between runs with a really slick trial at Warwick Farm in between, she loves that, a few visits to the beach, she loves the beach,” Cummings said.
“It is great to get that stakes win for the filly out of an Encosta De Lago mare and I guarantee this filly will throw a good colt herself one day.”
Cummings said that he had a couple of options for Tempt Me Not for the remainder of the Autumn Carnival and could head to the Group 3 $150,000 J H B Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in a fortnight or save her for the Listed $140,000 Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone on May 14.
“This is the big stage. The third year of ‘The Championships’. We are thrilled as a stable to be able to get here on the big day and deliver,” Cummings said.
“We could go to the J B Carr in a fortnight or we could freshen her up for the Denise’s Joy at Scone. We have a few options up our sleeves.”
