Some of the world’s best sprinters take to the track at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday in Sydney on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ in the TJ Smith Stakes 2016, betting tips for which are found below.
There are 15 in the mix for this year’s $2.5 million Group 1 Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), the weight-for-age Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic due to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT).
The market mover and favourite in the latest TJ Smith Stakes odds through Ladbrokes.com.au at a firming $2.70 for the win is the John O’Shea-trained, Godolphin-raced colt Exosphere.
He won the Golden Rose last year and returned with a strong fourth down the Flemington straight in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).
He’ll be better returning to Sydney after a freshen-up and an impressive trial win at Randwick in the wet over 1040m on March 18.
His main dangers according to the TJ Smith Stakes betting markets are the reigning champion Chautauqua ($3.50) with a wide barrier (11) to overcome but the class to do so and the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly English ($9).
So do the bookies have the TJ Smith Stakes result right or should you be focusing on a runner at longer odds such as the Joe Pride-trained Randwick specialist Terravista ($13) or even Flamberge ($19), who is now with Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra, at a big price to make it three Group 1 wins on the trot this time in?
#1 Chautauqua ($3.50)
He’s drawn wide and second best in betting, but still think the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Chautauqua has what it takes to go back-to-back in the TJ Smith Stakes on Saturday. Tommy Berry rides the five-year-old in the place of Dwayne Dunn, the galloper having won the Lightning Stakes first-up before the close third in the Newmarket. Should be peaking third-up and coming back to WFA off the handicap run he’ll be bouncing back.
#5 Our Boy Malachi ($21)
Big price on offer for the other Team Hawkes-trained hopeful in the mix, Dunn aboard the consistent Top Echelon seven-year-old who should get a lovely run from barrier six and who is also third-up. He comes off a Canterbury Stakes fifth from the start of March, has been freshened-up since, drops back to a distance he is stellar over (6-5-0-1) and at a track he is two-from-three at. Lots of boxes ticked by the recent Expressway Stakes winner who can surprise.
#14 Exosphere ($2.70)
The favourite can’t be ruled out completely with the return to Sydney hopefully sparking a return to winning form. The first-up run was brave and he’s a Group 1 winner, drawn well, a three length winner in his only other Randwick run in last year’s Roman Consul and jockey James McDonald is in ace form for Godolphin.
