In the second on Doncaster Mile Day in Sydney on Saturday a small field of three-year-old milers face off in the Carbine Club Stakes 2016, betting tips and the latest odds for the Royal Randwick clash found below.
Set to run at 12:45pm (AEDT) on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) attracted only nine final acceptors.
Of those the shortest-priced in the current Carbine Club Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.70 for the win in an open market is Data Point drawn the outside for in-form hoop Hugh Bowman.
Prepared at Cranbourne by Michael Kent, the smart Lonhro colt drops back in class after running a credible mid-field sixth to Le Romain last start on March 5 in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
He gets the same track and distance this weekend, but is draw better after doing it tough from barrier 13 of 13 last time out and will appreciate the easier assignment.
There are three other single figure hopes including two equal $4.60 second fancies in Carbine Club Stakes betting as it stands with the Robert Smerdon-trained Snitzel colt Odyssey Moon coming off a third in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) and Montauk for the ace Chris Waller stables – drawn well in barriers four and one respectively.
Rounding out the hopes under $10 for the win is the early market mover Moher ($9 into $7) for Godolphin and John O’Shea who James McDonald rides on the back of a mile win at Kembla Grange on March 23.
With so many livewire chances who will take out this year’s Carbine Club Stakes?
#4 Montauk ($6.50)
The inside alley boosts the chances of Waller’s More Than Ready gelding who is looking to atone for the luckless ninth at Kembla Grange on March 23. He carted 61kg from barrier 10 of 13 and was still beaten under two lengths over 1300m. He is a winner at this track and distance from last October, will appreciate the step back up to a mile, drops back to 56kg at set weights plus penalties here and can return to form with a clearer run.
#8 Queen Of Wands ($12)
One of the forgotten hopes in the race, Clarry Conners prepares this daughter of Not A Single Doubt who chases her third win on the trot. She’s untested over the distance but the mile looks like it will suit. She saluted over 1400m with 57.5kg on her back last start against a decent field, is up in class here but down in weights to 54kg and is in the mix with Zac Purton riding.
#7 Data Point ($3.70)
Current favourite has definite claims, the booking of Hugh Bowman a boost. His Randwick Guineas run a month back was credible and he’s been freshened-up since. He’ll improve off that against these types.
