The best three-year-olds stayers of the season face off at Royal Randwick on Saturday in the Australian Derby 2016, betting tips and the latest Fixed Win odds for the mile and a half classic found below.
Due to jump as Randwick Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEDT) on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’, this year’s $2 million Group 1 BMW Australian Derby (2400m) features a class field of 13 runners led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by the Mick Price-trained Tarzino.
Winner of the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2400m) in the spring and the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last time out, the Tavistock colt is firming and is now at an odds-on price in Australian Derby betting paying $1.90 to become a dual Derby winner.
Two other runners are under $10 for the win in the latest Australian Derby odds with the flying John O’Shea-trained Tally ($6.50) coming off a string of four wins including the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) in Melbourne and the sole filly in the mix Jameka ($6.50) who was a brave third in the Rosehill Guineas last time out.
So will the top three fancies cross first three over the line in the ATC Derby or is there value further down the markets tipping an upset from the likes of Chris Waller’s Spring Champion Stakes winner Vanbrugh ($10) or stablemate Torgersen ($16) coming off a Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) second from last Saturday?
#1 Tarzino ($1.90)
Tarzino is odds-on and at a very short price to complete the Rosehill Guineas – ATC Derby double, but he is the one to beat and even at these odds is the one to load up on. Barrier six is ideal, he dominated in similar company last time out, will be fitter for the run, is now proven the Sydney way and stepping up to 2400m will only work to his advantage. All ticks and no foreseeable crosses on this one.
#2 Vanbrugh ($10)
Like the price on Hugh Bowman’s mount, the Group 1 winner out to improve on a Rosehill Guineas fourth last time out from a wide gate. He will be better coming back to Randwick where he’s won two from three starts including the Spring Champion last October, and should be able to handle the distance. Barrier eight is the race’s most successful, his hoop is in great form and he could be the value tip in this.
#13 Jameka ($6.50)
Ciaron Maher’s Crown Oaks winning filly did it over the 2500m against her own kind last November on a Heavy (9) track and has been good again this time in taking on the boys in Group 1 class at her two last starts. The latest was the Rosehill Guineas third beaten two lengths when jumping from barrier 14 of 14. She is adaptable and can finish in the money again even from the double-digit gate with Damien Oliver retaining the ride.
