2016 Kindergarten Stakes Field: Astern Draws Wide

The John O’Shea-trained Astern has suffered a blow in his attempt at atoning for a failed Golden Slipper run with a Group 3 win this weekend drawing wide for the first at Randwick Racecourse – the Kindergarten Stakes 2016.

A bumper 10-race all black-type card runs at Royal Randwick for Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ on Saturday starting with the $200,000 Group 3 Widden Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) for the juveniles.

Originally a final field of 10 two-year-olds were accepted, but the early scratching of the Tony Gollan-trained Red Handle leaves just nine in the mix.

Due to jump from the outside alley with one of Sydney’s best hoops James McDonald in the saddle is the Godolphin-raced Astern.

The Medalia D’Oro colt won his first two career starts before finishing seven lengths away 11th to Capitalist in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 19, a wide barrier 16 of 16 draw getting the better of him in the lucrative $3.5 million feature.

He is looking for a consolation win for connections on Saturday and will appreciate dropping in class and distance against an easier line-up.

Also coming off Group form and out wide jumping one on the outside of Astern following the scratching of Red Handle (9) is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Lionhearted.

The Fastnet Rock colt was runner-up in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) two back before his fourth, crossing only 1.6 lengths off the winner Souchez in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m).

He’s had a little freshen-up between that March 12 run and Saturday, is down to Group 3 company and is experienced at the track and distance.

Gai Waterhouse saddles-up the promising Golden Rose type El Divino in barrier five with Blake Shinn booked for the ride on the Snitzel colt who blitzed his debut on March 17, handling a Heavy (8) track at Gosford to win by nearly five lengths over 1000m.

That followed two also impressive Randwick trail wins and he looks well-placed for his first stakes’ assignment on the weekend.

The other last-start winner in the mix is Al Maher filly Alliterate for Muswellbrook horseman Pat Farrell.

She is yet to race in the big city, but is well-tried with six starts producing three wins and two seconds to date on the provincial tracks around New South Wales.

Alliterate has won her past two on the trot over 1125m at Dubbo and 1100m by over two lengths at Wellington in mid-March ahead of Saturday’ run from gate three with Tommy Berry replacing Greg Ryan in the saddle.

Other notable hopes on the rise include the Bjorn Baker-trained daughter of Beneteau Geneteau and the returning Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Mooshakissa whose last start was a fifth to stablemate and subsequent Slipper winner Capitalist in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in early January.
