A copy book ride by James McDonald saw Old North score a comfortable win in the Group 2 $175,000 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill today.
Trainer John O’Shea now has the option of running Old North in the Group 1 $2m BMW Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on the first day of ‘The Championships’ next week.
“He gave indication there that he was strong at the trip and we will see what James says and see what the right approach and we will make a recommendation to the boss after that,” O’Shea said.
“We always thought very highly of him from the first day he went to the races and we are hoping that he repays the faith we have in him.”
McDonald settled Old North ($4 favourite) on the rails midfield and moved up behind the leaders once heads were turned for home.
At the 300m McDonald started to look for the way clear and found it in between runners and Old North ran away to score an impressive one and a quarter lengths win over Torgersen ($14) who finished strongly down the centre of the track with Multifacets ($10) filling third spot.
Old North’s win was the third for day for McDonald and O’Shea after they combined to win the Security Handicap (1400m) with Federal and the Group 3 $150,000 The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) with It’s Somewhat.
Old North was having his third run back from a spell today and made amends for his last start defeat as favourite when fourth in the Group 2 $175,000 Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 12.
