The Sunline Stakes 2016 is the key support act on the William Reid Stakes Night program at Moonee Valley Racecourse this evening, betting tips for the fillies-and-mares’ feature found below.
Originally a final field of 13 were in the mix for Moonee Valley Race 7 at 9:45pm (AEDT), but the early scratching of Ungrateful Ellen (3) leaves a dozen runners in this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m).
Favourite of the milers in the latest Sunline Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3 for the win is the widely-drawn Fenway jumping from the outside barrier with Blake Shinn aboard.
The Lee & Shannon Hope-trained High Chaparral four-year-year is best known for Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) win at Rosehill 12 months ago, and she has won just one race since.
That was at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) during a spring campaign that also included a second to Politeness in Flemington’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over the mile.
She has had three runs this time in, the latest produced a close fourth to Preferment in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 12.
Following Fenway in Sunline Stakes betting this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival are the likes of the Danny O’Brien-trained Miss Rose De Lago ($6) drawn well in barrier two with Sydney’s best hoop James McDonald down for the ride and last year’s winner Noble Protector ($6) who threw rider Craig Williams from the saddle first-up soon after jump in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m).
So can Fenway overcome the wide alley and salute for the punters or is there an upset Sunline Stakes result on the cards from the likes of the rails-drawn Wawail ($7.50) coming off a Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) win or early market mover Felicienne ($8) for Darren Weir who won Flemington’s Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) a fortnight back?
#4 Noble Protector ($6)
Robert Smerdon’s Haafhd mare won this race 12 months ago and is back shooting for another win at the Valley. She backed up for a third in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney last autumn before two unplaced runs to see out her spring. First-up this time in she threw Williams out of the saddle in the Matron Stakes, and finished the race riderless. So officially she’s resuming here, but she’ll be fitter for that run. Williams is back on here, the distance suits and think she can score at good odds here.
#9 Felicienne ($8)
Early money coming for Weir’s Al Maher four-year-old who saluted over the distance at Flemington a fortnight back. She has had one run for one win over a similar distance (1509m) at this track in December last year and is on the improve. Apprentice Harry Coffey is in-form and knows her well and based on her last run think she can sneak into the money again here.
#1 Fenway ($3)
Fenway is a Group 1 winner and placegetter and the class mare in this field. She has the wide alley to overcome so Shinn needs to be riding at his best to get her home, but set weights suits the favourite and she’s coming off tougher runs than the rest of these when runner-up to Bow Creek in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) and fourth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) against the boys.
