Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Star Kingdom Stakes 2016 features a host of classy sprinters this Easter Saturday at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, betting tips and the latest odds for The BMW Day showdown listed below.
Running as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:30pm (AEDT), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) features a final field of 11 runners led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by the market mover Malaguerra.
Backed in early from $3.20 to $2.60 after coming up trumps with the inside run from barrier one, the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained four-year-old has won five of his past six starts dating back to mid-August last year.
The only black-type of those came last start at Flemington on March 5 when the Magnus gelding took out the Listed Bob Hoystead Stakes (1000m) down the straight by one and three-quarter lengths.
He travels to Sydney for the first time on the weekend, but has a good record of two wins and a second from four previous runs over the 1200m and looks a big chance to salute for the punters even going up three kilos to 57.5kg.
His biggest dangers of winning second-up according to the current Star Kingdom Stakes odds are last start Group 3 runner-up at the track Alberto Magic ($4) jumping one wider from barrier two and the Gerald Ryan-trained All American four-year-old Bachman ($7) out in barrier 11 of 11.
So will the best in betting be first over the line or is there value further down the markets from the likes of Joe Pride’s 59kg top weight Target In Sight ($8) who returns to racing here or Ryan’s other runner Angels Beach ($7.50)?
#3 Alberto Magic ($4)
Second-up we are tipping improvement from this Allan Denham-trained five-year-old from Wyong. He won the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) here a fortnight back against a number of the same rivals, his third Sydney win on the trot. He hadn’t raced since May last year, but picked up right where he left off and is drawn a treat to keep things going. He is undefeated first-up (4-4-0-0) but also second-up (3-3-0-0) so should present well again here with Jason Collett retaining the ride.
#2 Malaguerra ($2.60)
Favourite and market mover has claims, but isn’t all that well weighted in the quality handicap. He’ll get things his way from barrier one and Blake Shinn is a good replacement in the saddle for Melham. Good win first-up, the distance is a non-issue (4-2-1-0) but this is a tougher class field and he carries more kilos.
#6 Bachman ($7)
The bookies have the market pretty spot on and Bachman, even from the draw, can finish in the money again here. He was only 1.4 lengths off Alberto Magic in the Maurice McCarten first-up and was better at the Gold Coast over 1300m winning the Goldmarket Handicap. Drops a kilo to 55.5kg from his last run, will be fitter and is in the mix.
