2016 Vinery Stud Stakes Nominations Feature Jameka

After a brave third behind the boys in last weekend’s Rosehill Guineas the Ciaron Maher-trained filly Jameka is nominated for a possible quick back-up into the Vinery Stud Stakes 2016 this Saturday back at Rosehill Gardens.

Winner of the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in Melbourne last spring, the Myboycharlie three-year-old is one of a bumper 20 fillies nominated for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

She has had three runs this time in, most recently crossing two lengths away third to Mick Price’s 2016 Australian Derby-bound Tarzino in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last Saturday.

Jameka could now run over the same track and distance in the Vinery Stud Stakes before tacking either the $2 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 2 or the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) the following Saturday on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’.

She is current co-favourite in the pre-field Vinery Stud Stakes odds at bookmakers around the country with the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained New Zealand expat Risque.

Darci Brahma filly Risque won the Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) over the mile last November before winning her Australia debut with success in Caulfield’s Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) on February 13.

She then ran third to Palentino in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), where Tarzino finished third, on March 5 and has her first look over further than that if accepted this weekend.

Lindsay Park’s Hayes & Dabernig have also nominated for Sacred Eye and Stay With Me in the Vinery Stud Stakes this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Hayes prepared the 2007 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Miss Finland (2007) and his next best fancied after Risque to win again is the spring’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) winner Stay With Me.

The daughter of Street Cry defeated Jameka (2nd) that run before a Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) sixth to the older mares at Flemington to round out that prep.

Her latest run this time in was a third in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) to Le Romain when beaten two lengths three weeks ago, a race that last produced a Vinery Stud Stakes winner in 2012 with Mosheen completing the double.

Sacred Eye meanwhile was last seen running fifth to Hattori Hanzo in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) on March 12.

The other headline Vinery Stud Stakes nominee is Happy Hannah prepared by last weekend’s Golden Slipper Stakes winning trainers Peter & Paul Snowden.

A progressive More Than Ready filly she has won two of her four starts to date, but is yet to step up into black-type company.

Her latest win was over 1600m at Warwick Farm on March 9 carrying 57.5kg to a one and a quarter length victory with last autumn’s Vinery Stud Stakes winning jockey Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Other notable entries include Kiwi raider Valley Girl who comes off a Group 1 2000m win at Terang from mid-February for Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs, fellow New Zealander Capella who finished only a half-length away fourth in the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) on March 5 and the John O’Shea-trained Teofilo filly Asinara who is bred to go the distance.

Check out the full Vinery Stud Stakes 2016 nominations below, the final field and barrier draw set for release on Wednesday.
