Early favourite Capitalist has produced a huge turn of foot in the final straight at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon to take out the featured 2016 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) from a fast-finishing Yankee Rose.

Capitalist drifted out to double figure odds after failing to win the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) first-up but jumped from the gates well in the 2016 Golden Slipper and settled in a great position on the fence, three pairs back.
Experiencing a carefree run in transit, jockey Blake Shinn peeled the son of Written Tycoon off the fence rounding onto the final straight and allowed the colt ample time to balance before asking for an extra effort.
Immediately responding, Capitalist produced a monumental turn of foot to pull clear and hit the line ahead of Yankee Rose; Flying Artie boxing on for third.
Shinn delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Capitalist to win the 2016 Golden Rose and was understandably thrilled to notch up his first win in the world’s richest two-year-old race.
“Words can’t describe it, I’m so emotional. This is the best feeling ever!” Shinn said.
“He was written off but I have to take my hat off to the team at home, Snowden Racing, Peter and Paul never wrote this horse off after his last start defeat.
“You just have to have the faith and go in confident into every race.
“Full credit to this horse’s ability – he backed up from the Magic Millions to today and I was just saying come on mate, just one more performance and he did it for me and I’m just so proud.
“It was a great run in transit, they went fast and I let Flying Artie cross me and he settled so well.
“I was just waiting for my options assessing around the 600m and he really sprinted hard.
“This is one of the greatest races in the world and to be able to win it, I just can’t thank everyone enough.”
Peter Snowden revealed he was always confident Capitalist would produce his best on 2016 Golden Slipper Day and said the horse will likely return to the paddock with a view towards the Spring Carnival campaign.
“It’s fantastic. To have this run with Paul beside with, with our own identity is just outstanding,” Snowden said.
“I wasn’t sure how they could put a horse from $3.80 to $11 after one run, but I’m not one to spruik horses up. You let your horses do they talking for you and I thought the best way is to just come out and produce on race day and that’s what he did in aces today.
“He showed right from his first-up run that he was special and he was racing in restricted class as far as Magic Millions horses go, so you have to wait and see and because he got beaten the other day they didn’t think that form was up to scratch.
“The way he’s been working, the quality of work he does and the way he goes about his job. I’m just so glad it came off today.
“Today’s the day, he’s done a great job today and let’s just soak up the moment.”
Punters who backed Capitalist in the Best Of Everything market at Ladbrokes.com.au have been paid out on $9 odds!
