Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The top race for three-year-old ATC Derby types on the Rosehill race card in Sydney on Saturday is the Rosehill Guineas 2016, betting tips for which are detailed below.
Due to run as Race 6 at 3:50pm (AEDT) on Golden Slipper Day, this season’s $600,000 Group 2 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) features a field of 14 hopefuls.
Heading the latest Rosehill Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.50 for the win is the Mick Price-trained Tarzino.
The Caulfield-based Price saddles up the top two fancied juveniles in Saturday’s $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in Extreme Choice and Flying Artie, and also plays a strong hand in the Rosehill Guineas with his Victorian Derby winner.
A son of Tavistock, Tarzino comes off a last start second to Palentino in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).
He was narrowly beaten second-up in that mile run and will appreciate getting out over further on the weekend after charging home late over 400m less.
Following the top fancy in the Rosehill Guineas odds this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival are Ciaron Maher’s VRC Oaks winning filly Jameka ($6.50), the Randwick Guineas winner Le Romain ($7) and Chris Waller’s Spring Champion Stakes winner over the distance last campaign Vanbrugh ($9).
So can Tarzino track towards the $2 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 2 with a win this weekend or is there an upset Rosehill Guineas result on the agenda from the likes of the Gai Waterhouse-trained improver River Wild ($10) or Montaigne ($10) for Anthony Cummings?
#3 Vanbrugh ($9)
For value we are looking to Sydney’s best trainer Waller and tipping his Encosta De Lago colt Vanbrugh to return to form third-up. He won the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at his last look at the distance last October before two unplaced runs this time in. The latest as a $31 shot was a sixth in the Australian Guineas, where he was beaten just over three lengths. He should improve sharply off that with the two runs behind him now and will relish the extra metres this Saturday.
#7 River Wild ($10)
Really like the improvement of Waterhouse’s Fastnet Rock colt River Wild who has winning form at Rosehill from January under a big weight (61kg). He was far from disgraced chasing them home when beaten only 1.6 lengths in the Australian Guineas for fourth, form we’re tipping to stack up over the Randwick Guineas form this season. Brenton Avdulla jumps on and rates his mount, as do we.
#1 Tarzino ($2.50)
The favourite will be somewhere up there in the finish, his proven staying ability and fast late sectionals in the Australian Guineas pretty hard to knock. Will get the soft run from barrier two where with jockey Craig Newitt continuing his association on one very nice horse who will like the 2000m and the 2400m of the Derby next month even more.
