The first of five Group 1 races on the Golden Slipper Stakes Day program at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday is the Ranvet Stakes 2016, betting tips for the weight-for-age classic found below.
Running as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:30pm (AEDT), this year’s $700,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) features a final field of just nine hopefuls.
The current Ranvet Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are now led by Hauraki ($3.90) jumping from a gun barrier two draw with in-form Sydney jockey James McDonald booked for the ride.
McDonald rode last year’s Ranvet Stakes winner Contributer (2015) for John O’Shea and the Godolphin stable who saddle-up four-year-old Reset gelding Hauraki this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The favourite is third-up after third place efforts behind Winx in the Apollo Stakes and the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), form the bookies are tipping to stack up this weekend.
It is a wide open affair in the Ranvet Stakes odds with another four single figure hopes including the rails-drawn Chipping Norton runner-up Dibayani ($4) and superstar stallion Criterion ($5) after his first win since the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) last October.
So will the best in betting get the job done for the punters or is there an upset Ranvet Stakes result on the cards from the likes of last Saturday’s Blamey Stakes runner-up at Flemington The United States ($6) or Chris Waller’s import Storm The Stars ($8.50)?
#1 Criterion ($5)
Really hard to go past the value on offer for the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained four-time Group 1 winner. This Sebring five-year-old has won over $7 million in prize money and is a Group 1 winner over the distance. He is crying out for more metres – proven by his Cox Plate (2nd) and Melbourne Cup (3rd) runs from the spring. First-up he was last home (7th) to Holler in the Canterbury Stakes over 1300m, but stepping up to 2000m at Rosehill (9-3-2-1) are big ticks for this class runner who will be hard to run down from barrier three.
#3 Dibayani ($4)
Going for a Lindsay Park quinella with Criterion’s stablemate Dibayani to finish in the money again after the Shamardal six-year-old was second to Winx in the Chipping Norton over a mile last time out. He has winning form up to 2200m so more metres suit him here three runs in. Hasn’t been to Rosehill before, but barrier one will put him in the mix for a soft run from the inside with Blake Shinn retaining the ride.
#4 Hauraki ($3.90)
Race favourite for last year’s winning stable, this progressive four-year-old ticks plenty of boxes three runs in. Timing is spot-on, barrier presents no issues (2), J. McDonald is in-form and won the race last year. The horse has winning form at the track and distance from last season and looks ready to peak.
