2016 Birthday Card Stakes Betting Odds & Tips

Perignon

Due to run as Rosehill Race 9 at 5:50pm (AEDT) on Golden Slipper Day, this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) field originally drew 18 starers plus an emergency.

That spare, Look To The Stars (11), gains a run after three early scratchings from the line-up.

The Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Pittsburgh Flyer, who drew the outside alley, will line-up in the $700,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) one race early coming in as the emergency for the withdrawn Oakleigh Plate winner Flamberge.

The other absentees from the Birthday Card Stakes field are #11 Noela’s Choice (12) and #15 Hieroglyphics (16).

Leading the latest Birthday Card Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $6 for the win is the Kris Lees-trained God’s Own five-year-old Brook Road.

She is second-up this weekend after a second at the track over 1100m last start behind Coolring carrying 59kg, a weight she drops back from to 56.5kg in the Birthday Card Stakes with Damian Lane to ride from a gun gate four draw.

Hot on her heels in the Birthday Card Stakes betting markets are the James Cummings-trained Group 3 Triscay Stakes winner from mid-February Sultry Feeling ($6.50), Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel filly Perignon ($7) who comes off a Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) win at Randwick and last year’s William Reid Stakes third placegetter Griante ($7.50).

So will the single figure fancies salute at the shorter odds or is there value to be found further down the markets for an upset result from the likes of the well-drawn 59kg top weight Cradle Me ($12) or lightly-raced four-year-old Flashing Speed ($11) with the wide gate to overcome at just her fourth career start?

1st

#10 Perignon ($7)

Going for Ryan’s youngster to hold out the mares here after her narrow Light Fingers win over the distance in mid-February. She’s been freshened-up since and drops from 56kg that day to Saturday’s 54kg minimum with a nice ride pending from barrier seven with Kerrin McEvoy jumping on. She runs at Rosehill for just the second time but was second to subsequent Flight Stakes winner Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes here last March. Third in that same Group 1 over a mile in October and is second-up with improvement to come.

2nd

#6 Two Blue ($16)

Rising eight-year-old from Wyong, this daughter of Dubelo has her 37th career start and has solid Rosehill form (12-2-5-0) and is a three-time winner from eight runs at this distance. Last September she was on fire with three straight seconds in black-type company including behind Peeping in Group 2 class, the winner of which won the Coolmore Classic this time in. Two trials bring her on fitness-wise, the latest of which she won on March 4 at Randwick over 1050m by 1.5 lengths. Just needs to handle the barrier (13 into 12) and weight (56kg).

3rd

#8 Sultry Feeling ($6.50)

Plenty of livewire place hopes including Blake Shinn’s mount who is second-up after the Encosta De Lago four-year-old won in Group 3 class defeating Peeping by three quarters of a length in February. Third in a recent trial at Warwick Farm and has winning Rosehill form and is a winning chance.
