Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Jockey Brenton Avdulla has labelled Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas 2016 on Golden Slipper Day as a “winnable race” for his mount River Wild at Rosehill Gardens.
Twenty-five-year-old Avdulla has secured seven Rosehill rides this weekend including a trio of Group 1 hopes across the card.
“When I decided to go freelance this season my aim was to work hard, travel to more meetings and stay competitive in town,” he told Racenet.
“I’ve probably been in front on the NSW premiership for most of the season and with a bit of luck I can stay there.
“My book of rides on Saturday looks very strong and whilst you can never get too confident in Group I races, I do have some good chances.”
He missed out on a mount in the meeting’s headline event – the $3.5 million Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) – but is still confident of securing at least one top level trophy.
Along with River Wild he rides The Galaxy hope Fell Swoop and Happy Clapper who takes on mighty mare Winx in the George Ryder Stakes.
Avdulla heads the NSW Jockey Premiership with 91 wins for the season to date and said he was “looking forward” to jumping aboard the Gai Waterhouse-trained River Wild in this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
“I’m really looking forward to River Wild,” he said. “It’s a winnable race for him.
“His two Melbourne runs have been good. He should roll forward and his biggest asset is his toughness.
“He will keep grinding away and if I can get him rolling at the right time I am confident he’ll be right there.”
One of five Group 1s on the program, the Rosehill Guineas field features 14 hopefuls this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Rosehill Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Mick Price’s Victoria Derby winner from the spring Tarzino ($2.50).
The last start Australian Guineas runner-up could be hard to beat from barrier two with Craig Newitt retaining the ride, but Avdulla isn’t giving away the win just yet.
He takes over for the Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble on $10 shot River Wild who was defeated only one and a half lengths when fourth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) behind Palentino at Flemington a fortnight ago.
River Wild has winning form at Rosehill back in late January, Avdulla aboard for that 1400m success where the youngster lumped a hefty 61kg to victory.
Other notable Rosehill Guineas fancies this season include last start Randwick Guineas winner Le Romain ($7) after the double last achieved by It’s A Dundeel (2013) and Crown Oaks winning filly Jameka ($6.50).
