2016 Rosehill Guineas Field: Tarzino Draws Barrier 2

Mick Price’s Rosehill Guineas 2016 favourite Tarzino has drawn nicely in barrier two for his shot at a maiden win since taking out the Victoria Derby last spring in Saturday’s Golden Slipper Day clash.

Due to jump as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:50pm (AEDT), this season’s $600,000 Group 2 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m) features a final field of 14 three-year-old staying types.

To wear the number one saddlecloth and jump favourite in Rosehill Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is Tavistock colt Tarzino jumping from barrier two, which produced last year’s winner Volkstok’N’Barrell (2015).

Winner of the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) last November, Tarzino has had two runs this time in including a second behind Palentino, who runs in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night, in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

From eight career runs, three of which he has won, the proven stayer is yet to line-up in Sydney so makes his interstate debut on the weekend.

History is against him for the win as the last Australian Guineas graduate to back-up and take out the Rosehill Guineas over 200m further was Diatribe (6th) back in 2000.

The traditional Rosehill Guineas lead-up race producing five of the past seven winners is the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), won this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in an upset by Le Romain.

Kris Lees’ Newcastle-trained Hard Spun gelding defeated the odds-on favourite Press Statement, who takes on star stablemate Winx in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (2000m), by a long neck as a $17 hope.

He races at Rosehill for the third time this weekend out to complete the double last achieved by It’s A Dundeel (2013) having run second in his two previous starts at the track.

To date Le Romain is untested over further than a mile so the distance in the Rosehill Guineas is the question, but his regular rider Christian Reith retains the mount and the horse is drawn in barrier seven that Volkstok’N’Barrell won from 12 months ago.

Also coming off a top three Randwick Guineas run is the Bjorn Baker-trained Gold Ambition (3rd) who chases his first win since April of last year from barrier 10 with Tye Angland booked for the Slipper Day ride.

Just one filly is accepted to take on the boys in the Rosehill Guineas this season with the Ciaron Maher-trained Crown Oaks winner Jameka.

No filly has won the race since Riverina Charm back in 1989, and Jameka suffered a further blow to her chances coming up with the outside barrier (14 of 14).

Other notable hopes include Chris Waller’s Spring Champion Stakes winner over the distance last campaign Vanbrugh also wide in barrier 12 and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fastnet Rock colt River Wild (eight) coming off an Australian Guineas fourth when beaten under one and a half lengths.
