2016 Alister Clark Stakes Field: Palentino Draws Six

Darren Weir’s Australian Guineas winner Palentino heads the field for Friday night’s Alister Clark Stakes 2016 at Moonee Valley Racecourse and is drawn midfield in barrier six for his first look at further than a mile.

The latest feature of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) takes place under the lights as Moonee Valley Race 6 at 9:15pm (AEDT) on Friday evening.

A final field of 11 three-year-olds are in the mix for the set weights clash including Teofilo colt Palentino who won the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

That was his third win from six career starts and he faces his longest distanced test to date in the Alister Clark with jockey Mark Zahra retaining the ride.

Also coming off a win is the John O’Shea-trained Tally who is undefeated this time in having won all three of his starts going back to late January.

Only one of those was in black-type company when the Godolphin-raced Street Cry colt beat home Flying Light by one and three-quarter lengths in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) on February 27.

Craig Williams was aboard for that tidy Group 2 success and is back aboard Tally on Friday as the horse looks to extend his winning streak and brilliance out over 2040m, a distance he saw last spring when fifth to subsequent Crown Oaks winning filly Jameka in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m).

Runner-up to Tally last time out in the Autumn Classic, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Flying Light is also accepted for the Alister Clark Stakes rematch this weekend.

The Exceed And Excel gelding is proven over the 2040m at Moonee Valley having won at the track and distance he returns to on Friday on January 23 ahead of his Autumn Classic second.

Damian Lane retains the ride in the horse’s next Group 2 test, Flying Light drawn ideally in barrier five.

The inside alley for Friday night at the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit belongs to Stawell-based Dane Shadow colt Patch Adams prepared by Terry & Karina O’Sullivan.

Patch Adams has won just one of his 14 career starts to date, but was far from disgraced when fourth from the same barrier (one) in the Autumn Classic last time out beaten just over three lengths.

On Saturday in Sydney Caulfield-based horseman Mick Price saddles-up the top two fancies in the iconic $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) – Extreme Choice and Flying Artie – and he is represented in the Alister Clark Stakes field by Top Ravine.

A nicely-bred son of Redoute’s Choice, the progressive colt had his first Group run in the Autumn Classic crossing third from the outside barrier 12.

He is set to get a better run from barrier two this weekend, apprentice Michael Dee continuing his association with the up-and-comer from one of the season’s best stables.

The least experienced of the Alister Clark Stakes acceptors this season meanwhile is the Michael Kent-trained Charlevoix who has just his third career start in the race.

Drawn in gate three with Brad Rawiller booked for the ride the New Approach colt won his debut at Sandown-Hillside on February 3 before a sixth in the Autumn Classic he’s out to improve on here.
