Purple Smile Wins 2016 Adelaide Cup: Consolation for Baster

After losing the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on protest at Flemington on the weekend jockey Stephen Baster was all smiles at Morphettville on Monday winning the Adelaide Cup 2016 aboard the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Purple Smile.

Baster and his roughie hope Awesome Rock were first past the post in this year’s Australian Cup on ‘Super Saturday’ but lost the race after a protest was upheld, lodged by original runner-up Preferment from the Chris Waller stables.

Today Baster was on another outside hope in the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m), Lindsay Park’s Zabeel five-year-old Purple Smile having his first look at the two miles.

The breeding suggested he’d get the trip and he proved the strongest stayer on the day, eating up the distance to score a last stride victory in the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival feature over Tunes with the red hot race favourite Real Love third.

Richard Laming’s Clyde-based stallion Wales, runner-up to Junoob in last year’s Ballarat Cup, was one of the best out of the barriers and took up the early running from the Grant Young-trained Tunes who was coming off a third in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at the track.

Darren Weir’s Lord Reims Stakes winner by over six lengths, Signoff was scratched from the Adelaide Cup field over the weekend due to an elevated temperature with the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November his long-term aim.

Weir was still represented by former Perth Cup winning mare Real Love who jumped the short-priced favourite, jockey Brad Rawiller settling her in the second-half of the field.

Purple Smile was also back off the pace tracking tracking three wide and covering lots of ground early, but with cover.

At the 1800m mare Real Love, who won the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington last start, started to improve her position three deep with Like A Carousel also sliding forward.

Purple Smile was still running wide moving into fourth with the Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double winner Up Cups next behind him, Real Love tracking the eventual runner into the race.

Towards the 1000m Distillation went to the lead, Tunes in third and Purple Smile in fourth with the home turn fast approaching and the pace picking up.

On the straight Tunes tracked down the inside along the fence taking the lead ahead of Purple Smile, the favourite Real Love stalking the frontrunners in third labouring to get to them.

With a big late burst it was Purple Smile ($15) who surged forward to snare the late win ahead of Tunes ($51) who had a massive run up front nearly early the way, while the top fancy Real Love ($2.35) was relegated to third in the Adelaide Cup trifecta.

“I must admit, we came into the race not all that confident with a long shot drawn the outside gate,” co-trainer Dabernig said post-win, also confirming plans for the stable to set up a permanent base in Adelaide.

“But he’s a Zabeel and he sat wide in the running, he didn’t have a lot of favours, but by the straight I could see he still had a lot of horse underneath him and he’s a very tough and genuine horse.

“He keeps coming and always sticks his neck out and is genuine to the line.”

Baster celebrated his second Adelaide Cup success and was thrilled to put the Australian Cup result behind him.

“You’ve really got to celebrate the ups (in racing),” he said.

“It hurt to run second in the Australian Cup, but now we’re here for the Adelaide Cup and we’ve won.

“It was a fantastic effort by this horse. He toughed it out and to his credit he was really strong to the line.

“I couldn’t see her (Real Love), but she’s a pretty good mare and I was worried they’d get to me in the last 100m.

“But obviously the two miles today is a different story and he was the best stayer on the day.”
