2016 Adelaide Cup Tips & Selections

This afternoon in South Australia one of the few genuine two-mile cup races still running down under takes place at Morphettville Racecourse, the insider Races.com.au tips for the Adelaide Cup 2016 found below.

Real Love

Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:15pm (local), this season’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) originally drew a final field of 18 stayers.

Over the weekend trainer Darren Weir scratched the red hot race favourite and top weight Signoff, the last start Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) winner at the track by over six lengths suffering from an elevated temperature.

Weir still saddles-up the Adelaide Cup betting favourite however in Real Love ($2.15) who will jump one of the shortest-priced favourites in the race’s history.

The former Perth-trained Desert King mare comes off a Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) win at Flemington from March 5 and drops from 56.5kg that day to carry the new 55.5kg top weight this afternoon.

She drew gate 12 but comes into 11 after the withdrawal of her stablemate, Brad Rawiller retaining the ride on the classy five-year-old who took out the 2015 Perth Cup at Ascot.

The only other single figure hopes in the updated Adelaide Cup odds through Ladbrokes.com.au are Aaron Purcell’s Torney Cup winner last month Swacadelic ($8) and the massive market mover Up Cups ($21 into $9.50) who has won his past four on the trot including the Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double.

So can Real Love get the job done for Weir in her first look at the 3200m or is there an upset Adelaide Cup result on the cards?

#2 Real Love ($2.15)

Without Signoff in the mix this tough mare is definitely the one to beat. She gives away weight, but they are kilos she can handle. She’s in flying form and Rawiller knows her well having ridden her for her past two starts in Melbourne. Plenty of time to overcome the wide gate and her win over 2600m last time out suggested she’ll handle the extra metres no worries.

#7 Up Cups ($9.50)

David Brunton prepares this visiting Tasmanian stayer who is in gun form shooting for a fifth win on the trot. The Helike gelding is untested in Adelaide or over two miles, but earned a shot at the Cup title following his brilliant form at home including the Group 3 Hobart Cup and Group 3 Launceston Cup wins in February over the mile and a half. He carried 58kg to victory last time out in the latter and drops to 54kg this afternoon. That’s good weight relief and the Tassie form often stacks up interstate around this time of year.

#13 Last Wish ($12)

So many livewire hopes to finish off the top three including this nicely-drawn Guillotine gelding prepared by Tony McEvoy. The five-year-old has won his past two over 2400m and 2500m respectively in Melbourne with far more weight than his 53kg minimum today. The kilos alone put him in the frame, and Sam Clipperton is in the saddle fresh off a big Saturday in Sydney including the Group 1 Coolmore Classic win on Peeping.
