Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Magic Night Stakes 2016 runs as one of nine races at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday in Sydney and betting tips for the two-years-old fillies’ race can be found below.
Running as Rosehill Race 3 at 1:35pm (AEDT) on Coolmore Classic Day, the field for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Bede Murray Magic Night Stakes (1200m) is down to 15 starters after the early scratching of Sugarparma (12).
Leading the updated Magic Night Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a current quote of $3.10 is Prompt Response from the leading Golden Slipper Stakes winning stables of Gai Waterhouse.
This lightly-raced daughter of Beneteau has had just the one run to date when second in Group 3 company behind Concealer last November at Flemington, so makes her Sydney debut on Saturday.
She blitzed a Randwick trial over 737m last month by three lengths catching the eye ahead of her return where Kerrin McEvoy has the ride from the inside alley.
The most likely to beat home the favourite according to the Magic Night Stakes betting markets include Calliope ($3.40) with the gun barrier two draw and James McDonald in the saddle, and the early market mover Omei Sword ($5.50) in gate four for Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller.
So will the single figure fancies get the job done or is there value tipping an upset Magic Night Stakes result from the likes of Kris Lees-trained Inglis Classic winner Twist Tops ($12) or even Reisling Stakes graduate from last weekend Super Too ($41) for a boilover?
#2 Calliope ($3.40)
The John O’Shea-trained Calliope was scratched at the gates in a shock last Saturday, but gets the chance to atone with a Group 2 win this weekend. She’s drawn to do that in barrier two and McDonald is on fire. She took out the Listed Gimcrack Stakes over 1000m at Randwick on debut last October and her last start in Melbourne was a Blue Diamond Prelude fifth. She’ll appreciate being back in Sydney, and if she can behave and run she’s a big winning hope against this class.
#1 Twist Tops ($12)
The best-tried in the field with four previous runs, Beneteau filly Twist Tops won the Inglis Classic over 1200m two back and was far from disgraced last time out when fourth to Scarlet Rain in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m). Rosehill should suit, she’s got class and only needs to put it all together from barrier six with Corey Brown taking over for T. Berry in the saddle.
#5 Prompt Response ($3.10)
Race favourite has definite claims to salute for the punters here, especially from the alley. Waterhouse is a master trainer of Golden Slipper-bound two-year-olds and this filly was impressive on debut in the spring beaten only a half-length in Melbourne. She had an easy trial win in Sydney last month leading up to her return, the alley to help and she’s a winning hope if the fitness is up.
