Clarry Conners’ veteran warhorse Decision Time is the highest-rated and weighted acceptor for the Maurice McCarten Stakes 2016 this Coolmore Classic Day in Sydney.
Due to run as Rosehill Gardens Race 5 at 2:50pm (AEDT) on Saturday, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Smooth FM Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) has attracted a final field of 10 sprinters.
Carrying the 58kg top weight in the handicap clash from barrier five with Tommy Berry in the saddle is rising nine-year-old Decision Time.
The Group 2 winning and Group 1 placed gelding shoots for his first win since the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) in August last year and comes off a second to Big Money in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) from mid-February at Randwick.
He only had 54kg on his back that day however and despite a good recent barrier trial, could struggle with his allocated weight this weekend.
Following Decision Time in the Maurice McCarten Stakes weights this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with 57kg is the Joe Pride-trained Craftiness.
Pride won the race 12 months ago with Target In Sight (2015) and returns with his smart Starcraft five-year-old Craftiness who is second-up on the weekend.
The horse has a strong second-up record of two wins and a third from four runs to date and is also two-from-three at Rosehill Racecourse, however he hasn’t won since a Brisbane sprint win at Doomben last March so has a year-long drought to break.
Local horseman Gerald Ryan has two runners on Saturday with stablemates Bachman and Angels Beach drawn in barriers seven and two respectively.
All American four-year-old Bachman won back-to-back December races during the summer including a Listed race at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day before his eighth in the Magic Millions Cup to Lucky Hussler last start.
Runner-up in last June’s Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) he has winning form at Rosehill and has won first-up also.
Bel Esprit mare Angels Beach is first-up off a lengthy break not having run since July last year in Melbourne.
She has no Rosehill form to date, but has a stellar record of two wins and a second from four starts over the distance and flies fresh with three wins and three seconds from six first-up runs so far.
To bring the six-year-old on, Ryan has twice trialled Angels Beach ahead of her return and her latest was a very good third to Counterattack over 900m at Rosehill on February 29 when beaten under a length.
Also first-up and drawn a treat with the inside run from barrier one is Wyong galloper Alberto Magic for Allan Denham.
The Magic Albert five-year-old was last seen winning over 1100m on a Heavy (9) Randwick track last winter, his two lead-up trials in February producing two solid Sydney heat wins including over 900m at Rosehill in late February.
Other notable hopes include Jan Bowen’s recent Warwick Farm winner from Muswellbrook Eminent Duke and the John O’Shea-trained Barbed in gate three for top hoop James McDonald.
